Meltwater GenAI Lens Review: Is It the Best Enterprise AI Visibility Tool?
For PR and communications teams already on Meltwater, GenAI Lens is one of the strongest options. It runs your prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and other models. It reports visibility, prevalence, sentiment, share of voice and cited sources, beside the news and social data those teams already use. It is not the best choice for every enterprise. SEO and content teams usually need page-level recommendations, AI crawler data and a link to site traffic, which GenAI Lens does not focus on. It is sold as an add-on to a Meltwater contract, which buyers report at a median of about $25,800 a year before the add-on. Whether it is "best" depends on which team owns AI visibility.
Does Meltwater track GEO visibility?
Yes, through GenAI Lens, launched in July 2025. Meltwater says it runs your custom prompts against public AI platforms and analyses the answers for your brand, products, key people and competitors. Across its launch announcement and product pages, it names ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Llama and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Metrics include:
- Mention frequency and prevalence, a score for how deeply your brand features in answers.
- Sentiment and narratives, including themes, emotions and notable absences.
- Competitive share of voice, which Meltwater calls Share of Model.
- Sources, the websites and journalists AI answers cite.
- Trends over time, with geography settings.
You can track branded prompts, such as what your company does, and unbranded ones, such as the best products in your category. Prompt templates help set up monitoring quickly. Meltwater stores GenAI Lens data in its Snowflake-based platform and says the monitored models do not train on your prompts.
One detail to confirm: Meltwater's own FAQ describes runs every 24 to 48 hours in one answer and weekly in another. Ask which applies to your plan.
What does it do well?
- One view of all coverage. AI answers sit next to news, social and broadcast monitoring, so a comms team can see whether a story in the press is now shaping AI answers.
- Reputation risk. Sentiment and narrative tracking suits spotting misinformation or outdated claims early.
- Source and journalist insight. Knowing which outlets and authors AI answers cite connects directly to media relations.
- Executive reporting. Executive Reports combine visibility and sentiment scores, competitive position, narratives, owned-content influence and recommendations in a format executives can read without a Meltwater seat.
- Wide model coverage, including models that many SEO-focused trackers skip.
Meltwater review: AI monitoring that needs manual workflow integration
The weakness is what happens after the insight. GenAI Lens shows how AI describes you and which sources it cites. Acting on that usually involves other teams and tools: SEO and content teams update pages, web analysts measure AI referral traffic, and PR teams pitch outlets. Meltwater connects well to collaboration and reporting tools: Slack, Microsoft Teams, Power BI, Looker, Domo, data warehouses, Zapier webhooks and an MCP server for AI assistants. What it does not offer, as far as its pages show, is:
- Page-level optimisation. It does not audit or rewrite your pages for AI retrieval.
- AI crawler data. It does not show which AI bots visit your site.
- Web analytics joins. A Google Analytics 4 integration, added in 2026, links AI visibility to website traffic; anything beyond GA4, such as CRM or warehouse data, still needs exports.
For other data, teams export and join it themselves. Meltwater says GenAI Lens supports its standard export formats. Its API documentation lists listening and social analytics, and says API Foundations is included in most packages. Ask whether GenAI Lens results are available through the API or data streams, since that decides how much of the joining can be automated.
How does it compare with other enterprise tools?
| Need | GenAI Lens | SEO-led platforms such as BrightEdge or seoClarity | Dedicated AI trackers such as Profound |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI answers beside news and social | Strong | Weak | Weak |
| Sentiment and narrative | Strong | Moderate | Moderate to strong |
| Page-level content fixes | Not a focus | Strong | Moderate |
| AI crawler analytics | No | Yes | Yes |
| Link to site traffic | GA4 integration; other tools via export | Built in | Varies |
The PR-tool comparison is in Muck Rack vs Meltwater, and another listening platform is covered in the Brandwatch review. For SEO-led alternatives, see Semrush vs AthenaHQ and BrightEdge.
What does it cost?
Meltwater does not publish prices. GenAI Lens is a modular add-on to an existing Meltwater subscription, priced by your account manager. Procurement data from Vendr puts the median Meltwater contract at about $25,800 a year across 126 purchases, ranging from roughly $5,400 to $57,000. Add the GenAI Lens module on top. If you do not already use Meltwater, the full platform cost only makes sense if you also need its media monitoring.
Who is it for?
- Good fit: enterprise communications, PR and brand teams already on Meltwater, especially in reputation-sensitive sectors.
- Reasonable fit: marketing teams that want AI visibility reported alongside earned media, and have analysts to join exports with web data.
- Poor fit: SEO and content teams whose job is changing pages, and companies that would buy Meltwater only for AI tracking.
How should a comms team and a web team share it?
Because GenAI Lens sits in a PR tool, the web and SEO teams often never log in. A simple split avoids that:
- Comms owns the prompt set and narrative tracking, reviewing sentiment and cited outlets weekly.
- Web owns the pages AI answers cite or should cite, receiving a monthly export of prompts, answers and sources.
- Analytics owns the join, matching cited sources and prompts with AI referral sessions and conversions.
- Both teams meet monthly to agree which gaps need press work and which need page changes.
Executive Reports can serve as the shared summary, since readers do not need a Meltwater seat.
What should you ask before buying?
- How often do prompts run, and on which models, for your contract?
- How many prompts are included, and what do more cost?
- Are answers collected from the consumer apps or through APIs? Meltwater says it queries public-facing platforms; ask what that means for each model.
- Can GenAI Lens data flow through the API or data streams into your warehouse?
- What do Executive Reports recommend, and can you see the evidence behind each recommendation?
We have not tested GenAI Lens ourselves; these questions are where independent reviews and buyers most often disagree.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative consumer bank, Harlow Savings, whose comms team already used Meltwater. GenAI Lens showed assistants describing its savings rates using figures from an old news article, and ranking it below two rivals in prompts about the best savings accounts. The comms team pitched updated rate stories to the outlets AI answers cited most. Meanwhile, its web team exported the prompts and sources weekly, joined them with GA4 data in the bank's warehouse, and updated the rates page. Two months later the outdated figure had disappeared from most answers.
