Profound vs Similarweb: AI Visibility Tracking or Traffic Analytics?
Profound and Similarweb sit on opposite sides of AI search. Profound measures what AI answers say: which brands are mentioned and cited for the prompts you track, across up to nine engines. It adds prompt demand estimates, and agents that draft work from the findings. Similarweb measures what happens after the answer. It estimates visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and other chatbots to any website, including competitors', and adds an AI Brand Visibility view of topics, prompts and sources. One is answer tracking; the other is traffic analytics. Most teams need a view of both, but rarely both paid platforms. Your own analytics and Search Console can cover part of either side.
What does each measure?
| Profound | Similarweb | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary question | Are we mentioned and cited in AI answers, and why? | How much traffic does AI send to us and to competitors? |
| Unit | Prompts and answers | Website visits and pages |
| Coverage | Up to nine answer engines on Enterprise; ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews on the trial | AI chatbot referrals such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok |
| Competitors | Their mentions, citations and share of voice on your prompts | Their estimated AI referral traffic and top pages |
| Demand data | Prompt volume estimates | Topics and prompts behind tracked topics; market traffic shares |
| Data type | Sampled AI answers | Modelled traffic estimates |
| Action layer | AI Marketer agents that draft content and campaigns | Research and benchmarking |
| Pricing | Brands: free trial, then custom Enterprise; agencies $99/mo plus $399 per client | Self-service packages and custom quotes, with a free trial |
Why does the difference matter?
Visibility and traffic can move in different directions. AI answers often satisfy a question without a click, so a brand can gain mentions while AI referral traffic stays flat. Traffic can also rise from a single well-cited page while overall mentions barely change. Tracking only one side leads to wrong conclusions:
- Answer tracking alone cannot show whether visibility turns into visits or revenue.
- Traffic analytics alone cannot show why you are or are not recommended, or which sources decide it.
So decide which question matters more for your next decision, then cover the other side cheaply.
When is Profound the better choice?
- You need to understand and change answers: which prompts you lose, which sources assistants trust, and how competitors are described.
- You need broad engine coverage, across several brands or markets.
- You want execution help. Profound's AI Marketer drafts pages, guides, posts and campaigns for approval.
- You can justify an enterprise contract, or you are an agency paying per client.
Its limits: its traffic data covers only your own site, through Agent Analytics reading your CDN or server logs for AI crawler visits and AI-referred visitors, it has no competitor traffic estimates, and its brand trial uses recommended prompts you cannot edit.
When is Similarweb the better choice?
- You need competitive traffic intelligence: which competitors receive the most AI referral traffic, on which pages, and how that changes.
- You need market sizing, such as how much AI chatbots contribute to traffic in your category compared with search.
- You already use Similarweb for web and competitor research.
Its limits: traffic figures are modelled estimates that can differ from your own analytics, especially for smaller sites. AI apps often send visits without a referrer, which estimates may miss. And its AI Brand Visibility view covers the topics you choose, not every prompt users ask.
What questions does each answer well?
| Question | Better tool |
|---|---|
| Which prompts do we lose to competitors? | Profound |
| Which sources do assistants trust in our category? | Profound |
| How are we described, and is it accurate? | Profound |
| Which competitors get the most AI referral traffic? | Similarweb |
| Which competitor pages attract AI visitors? | Similarweb |
| Is AI traffic growing in our market relative to search? | Similarweb |
| Did our visibility gains produce more visits? | Neither alone; combine answer data with your own analytics |
The last row is the one leadership usually asks about. Few platforms answer it well, because it needs your own traffic data joined to answer data over time. Some trackers now connect GA4 or server logs, such as Profound's Agent Analytics and Peec's AI referrals, but you still need several months of both series side by side. Plan for that join from the start. Keep a weekly table of mention and citation rates next to AI referral sessions and conversions, so trends can be compared after a few months.
How can you cover both sides without two platforms?
- If you buy Profound, cover traffic with your own analytics. Use GA4's built-in AI Assistant channel for AI referral visits, and add Search Console's generative AI report for AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. You lose competitor traffic estimates, but gain accurate data for your own site.
- If you buy Similarweb, its AI Brand Visibility prompt tracking (150 prompts on the $99 plan) covers basic answer tracking; add a dedicated tracker only if you need more engines, prompts or source classification.
How to link the two kinds of data is covered in how to correlate AI visibility metrics with actual website traffic.
How do the costs compare?
Neither publishes a full price list for large customers. Profound's brand plans are custom after a seven-day trial. Its agency plan costs $99 a month plus $399 per client workspace. Similarweb publishes AI search plans: AEO Intelligence at $99 a month, with 150 tracked prompts refreshed daily, citations, sentiment and AI traffic estimates, then $333 with SEO and competitive data and $542 with ads, plus a free trial; larger packages with API access are quoted. For a mid-sized company, either can reach thousands of dollars a year. Price the question you most need answered, not the platform.
Which should you choose?
- Marketing teams trying to win AI answers: Profound, or a lower-cost tracker, plus your own analytics.
- Strategy, insights and competitive intelligence teams: Similarweb, plus a manual or low-cost answer check.
- Enterprises with both needs and budgets: both, with a clear split of responsibilities.

How do you evaluate them side by side?
- Write down the two or three decisions the data must support this quarter.
- In Profound's trial, see whether its answer data explains the prompts you lose, and whether its sources are specific.
- In Similarweb's trial, compare its AI referral estimates for your own site with your analytics, to judge how far to trust its competitor figures.
- Check competitors in both: does high AI visibility in Profound line up with high AI traffic in Similarweb?
- Choose the tool whose output would change what you do next.
What might a combined picture show?
Consider an illustrative online travel insurer. Profound showed it cited in about 40% of answers to its tracked questions, level with its main rival. Similarweb estimated the rival received roughly twice the insurer's ChatGPT referral traffic. Most of that went to a single comparison tool page that answers linked to directly. Visibility was even, but the rival's cited page gave users a reason to click. The insurer built an interactive comparison page of its own, and watched its AI referral sessions in GA4 over the following months.
What do people ask about Profound and Similarweb?
Can Profound show AI referral traffic?
For your own site, yes: Agent Analytics, on the trial and Enterprise, reads your CDN or server logs for AI crawler visits and AI-referred visitors. It has no estimates for competitors' sites, which is where Similarweb differs.
Can Similarweb show AI mentions?
Yes, through AI Brand Visibility, which shows topics, prompts, top brands and sources.
Which is more accurate?
They measure different things. Profound samples answers, and Similarweb models traffic. Check each against your own data.
Do I need either for a small business?
Usually not. Free reports from Google and Bing, your analytics, and manual checks cover most small-business needs.
