What Happens to Gemini Recommendations When a Google Business Profile Is Suspended?
For local questions, you are likely to drop out. Gemini draws on Google Maps data for places, reviews, addresses and opening hours. Google says that when it removes a Business Profile, the public can no longer reach it. Without that place record, Gemini has little to recommend you from, and it may fall back on older web pages or name competitors instead. A suspension that leaves the profile visible but locked is less severe, but your hours and details can go stale because you cannot edit them. ChatGPT and Perplexity are affected less, since they have no direct access to Google profiles. Appeal quickly with evidence, do not create a new profile, and shore up your other listings while you wait.
Why does a profile matter so much to Gemini?
Because Gemini's local answers are built on Google's place data. Google's documentation for grounding Gemini with Google Maps says the model retrieves places, reviews, photos, addresses and opening hours when a question has a location, and the Gemini app uses public information from Google Maps automatically. Your Business Profile is your place record in that data. Take it away, and Gemini loses the facts and the reviews it would use to recommend you. How Gemini uses those signals is covered in how Business Profile reviews and Maps data affect Gemini local recommendations.
What does suspension actually do to a profile?
Google's help pages describe several outcomes:
- Suspended or disabled profiles. Google says it may suspend or disable profiles that do not follow its guidelines, and that owners can appeal.
- Removed profiles. When Google removes a profile, the public cannot go to it, and owners and managers cannot act on it. If Google reinstates it, both the profile and its owner and managers are restored.
- Account restrictions. If the Google account itself is restricted, the Business Profiles it manages are suspended, and the owner cannot create or claim others.
In practice, owners describe two situations: a profile that disappears from Maps and Search, and a profile that stays visible but cannot be managed. The first removes you from Gemini's local answers. The second leaves you visible but frozen, so any change to hours, address or services cannot be published, and Gemini keeps showing the old details.
What will Gemini say instead?
It depends on what else it can find. Possible outcomes:
- You are not mentioned for "best [service] near me" questions, because there is no place record to rank.
- A competitor is recommended in your place, with its reviews and hours.
- Old or partial facts appear from web pages, directories or news, without current hours or reviews.
- You are described as closed or unavailable, if the sources Gemini finds suggest the business no longer operates.
Similar symptoms with other causes are discussed in why Gemini describes a company as closed when its website is current.
Are ChatGPT and Perplexity affected?
Less directly. Neither has direct access to Google Business Profiles. They draw mainly on your website, Yelp and other directories, although Google Maps links can still appear among ChatGPT's sources for local questions. A Google suspension does not remove you from those sources. But if Google Maps was the only complete, current record of your business, other assistants may be working from thin or outdated information anyway. A suspension is a good moment to check that those other records are complete.
What should you do first?
- Find out why. Google's appeals tool shows the restricted profile, the reason for the action and a link to the policy it says you broke.
- Fix the problem before appealing. Common guideline issues include names stuffed with keywords, virtual offices, service-area businesses showing an address, and duplicate profiles.
- Do not create a new profile. Google says not to create a new Business Profile for the same business while an appeal is under review.
- Appeal once, with evidence. Google suggests official business registration, a business licence, tax certificates or utility bills, with the name and address matching the profile. Evidence must be submitted within 60 minutes of opening the evidence form.
- Wait for the decision. Google says reviews and decisions can take up to five business days, and asks owners not to submit multiple appeals for the same issue.
How do you protect visibility while you wait?
Strengthen the sources that do not depend on Google:
- Your website: make sure the home page, contact page and service pages state your name, address, hours and services clearly, with LocalBusiness structured data.
- Bing Places and Apple Business: complete them, since they feed Copilot and Siri.
- Yelp and your sector's directories, which feed ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools: check that your key pages are indexed, so Google's other AI features and Bing can still find you.
These steps do not replace the profile for Gemini's map-based answers, but they keep you findable elsewhere and give Gemini accurate web sources to draw on.
What happens after reinstatement?
Google says reinstatement restores the profile and its owners and managers. After that:
- Check every field: name, address, hours, categories and services, since some may have reverted.
- Update anything that changed during the suspension, such as hours.
- Check Gemini's answers to your key questions over the following weeks, since place data and answers take time to catch up.
- Record what caused the suspension, so the same problem is not reintroduced by a future edit or an agency.
How do you avoid suspension in the first place?
Follow Google's guidelines for representing your business: use your real business name without added keywords, one profile per business, a staffed location or a properly configured service area, and accurate categories. Be careful with third-party tools and agencies that bulk-edit profiles, and keep documents that prove your name and address, such as registration and utility bills, ready in case you need them.
What is not documented?
Google documents what happens to the profile, but not how Gemini treats a business whose profile is suspended or under appeal. We have not run our own before-and-after tests on a suspended profile; the likely effects above are inferred from Google's Maps grounding documentation and its help pages on removed profiles. Two points are unclear: whether Gemini keeps any cached place details during a short suspension, and how quickly it picks the business up again after reinstatement. Treat any timeline you read elsewhere as an estimate, and check your own answers directly.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative locksmith, Ostrwyn Locksmiths, whose profile was suspended after an agency added "24/7 Emergency Locksmith London" to the business name. Gemini stopped naming it for emergency locksmith questions within days and recommended three rivals instead. Ostrwyn restored its real name, removed the address from its service-area profile, and appealed with its company registration and a utility bill. While waiting, it completed Bing Places and Yelp and updated its website's service pages. The profile was reinstated within a week, and Gemini's answers began including Ostrwyn again a few weeks later.
What do people ask about suspended profiles and Gemini?

Should I create a new profile while suspended?
No. Google says not to create a new profile for the same business while an appeal is under review.
How long does a Google Business Profile appeal take?
Google says reviews and decisions can take up to five business days.
Does a suspension affect ChatGPT answers?
