How Do Google Business Profile Reviews and Maps Data Affect Gemini Local Recommendations?

Heavily. Gemini automatically uses public information from Google Maps. When a question is about places, it retrieves Maps data such as places, reviews, photos, addresses and opening hours, working much like a search on Maps. Ask Maps, Gemini's conversational layer inside Google Maps, draws on more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors. So your Business Profile's categories, details, hours and photos, and especially the number, rating and wording of your reviews, shape whether Gemini recommends you. Google does not publish how Gemini weighs these signals. Its local ranking factors of relevance, distance and prominence remain the best guide to what matters.

How does Gemini get local business information?

Through several routes, all built on Google's own data:

  • The Gemini app. Google's Gemini help pages say Gemini automatically uses public information from certain Google services, including Google Search, Google Maps, Hotels, Flights and YouTube.
  • Ask Maps. Launched in the US in March 2026, it answers conversational questions inside Google Maps using Gemini. Google says it analyses information from over 300 million places, including reviews from its community of more than 500 million contributors, and personalises results based on places you have searched for or saved.
  • Grounding with Google Maps. Google's developer documentation for this Gemini feature explains the mechanism: when a query has geographic intent, Gemini calls a Maps tool that retrieves places, reviews, photos, addresses and opening hours. The tool behaves much like searching on Maps, with "near me" queries using the searcher's location.
  • Google Search. Gemini can also draw on web results, including your website and third-party pages about you.

The practical point is that for most local questions, Gemini starts from the same place data that powers Google Maps. Your Business Profile is that data. How Gemini uses Search more broadly is covered in whether Gemini uses Google Search data to generate answers.

Which Business Profile data matters most?

Google has not published a Gemini-specific list, but the data Maps grounding retrieves, and Google's own local ranking guidance, point to these:

Data Why it matters for Gemini What to do
Primary and secondary categories Decide which questions your business is relevant to Choose the most specific primary category; add accurate secondary ones
Services, products and attributes Let Gemini match detailed requests, such as "wheelchair accessible" or "same-day repairs" Fill in every relevant service and attribute
Hours, including special hours Questions like "open now" or "tonight" depend on them Keep hours and holiday hours current
Address and service area Distance is a core local factor Make sure the pin and service area are right
Reviews: count and rating Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking Ask every customer; reply to reviews
Review text Supplies the detail behind conversational answers Ask every customer for an honest review in their own words
Photos Retrieved alongside places, and useful for "what is it like" questions Add current interior, exterior and product photos
Website link and description Connect the profile to your own explanation of what you do Keep both current and consistent

How do reviews affect Gemini's recommendations?

In two ways. The first is prominence. Google's help page on local ranking says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence draws on information such as how many reviews a business has and links to it from other sites. More reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Because Maps grounding behaves like a Maps search, it is reasonable to expect prominence to carry into Gemini's choices too.

The second is content. Conversational questions carry detail that star ratings cannot answer: "a quiet café with space to work," "a dentist who is good with nervous patients," "a garage that does not upsell." Ask Maps describes this directly as insider tips from real people, drawn from Maps' community of contributors. If your reviews never mention the qualities people ask about, Gemini has little to match. Google's rules limit what you can do about that. Its Maps content policy forbids offering incentives, selectively asking happy customers, and requesting that specific content be included in a review. What you can do is ask every customer for an honest review of their real experience, and list your services and attributes so answers have something to match. What happens when reviews are manipulated is covered in whether fake reviews can change Gemini recommendations.

What happened to Business Profile Q&A?

It is being phased out. Google's developer changelog records that the My Business Q&A API was discontinued on 3 November 2025, so tools can no longer read or post questions and answers. Local search publications report that the Q&A section itself has been removed from profiles, with AI-generated answers through Ask Maps taking its place. Any advice to seed your own Q&A for Gemini is therefore out of date. The information you once put in Q&A now belongs in your profile's services, attributes and description, and on your website, where Gemini can still find it.

Why can Gemini recommend a different business from the map pack?

Several reasons:

  • Personalisation. Ask Maps personalises results using places you have searched for or saved, so two people can see different recommendations.
  • More specific questions. A conversational question adds constraints, such as price, atmosphere or accessibility, that filter the usual ranking.
  • Other sources. Gemini can combine Maps data with web pages, so a business well covered in local guides may be favoured.
  • Location handling. "Near me" questions use the searcher's location, while questions naming a place may not.

Checking what Gemini says about you in practice is set out in how to check what Gemini says about your business.

Is a business without a Business Profile invisible to Gemini?

Not entirely, but close to it for most local questions. Gemini can find a business through Search and its website. But when Gemini answers a place question through Maps data, it retrieves places that exist in Google Maps, so a business without a profile, or with a thin or unverified one, has little chance of being picked. Google's local ranking guidance also says verified businesses are more likely to show up in results.

What should a local business do?

  1. Verify and complete your profile: categories, services, attributes, hours, service area, photos and description.
  2. Build a steady flow of reviews, asking every customer and replying to reviews, without incentives.
  3. Ask plainly and neutrally, without suggesting what to write, since Google's policy forbids requesting specific content.
  4. Keep hours and special hours current, especially before holidays.
  5. Align your website with your profile, with the same services, areas and facts.
  6. Test real questions in Gemini and Ask Maps each month, from your area, and note which competitors appear.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative family dental practice, Hollybank Dental, with a 4.8 rating but only 40 reviews, most of them a line long. In Gemini, questions like "dentist good with anxious children near me" named two rival practices whose reviews described calm, patient treatment of children. Hollybank added its paediatric and sedation services to its profile, updated its photos, and began asking every family after each appointment for an honest review. After four months it had 110 reviews, many mentioning children, and it began appearing in Gemini's answers to those questions.

What do people ask about Gemini and Business Profiles?

Does Gemini read my Google reviews?

Google's Maps grounding retrieves reviews along with places, photos, addresses and opening hours, and Ask Maps draws on reviews from over 500 million contributors.

Do more reviews help me in Gemini?

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, and Gemini's Maps data works much like a Maps search.

Does Gemini still use Business Profile Q&A?

Google discontinued the Q&A API in November 2025, and reports say Q&A has been removed from profiles in favour of AI answers.

Can I pay to be recommended by Gemini?

Not as an organic recommendation. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking; ads are separate and labelled.
