Does Gemini Use Google Search Data to Generate Answers?
Yes. Gemini uses Google Search to generate answers whenever a question needs current, specific or verifiable information, and it shows the pages it relied on as sources. The Gemini app decides for each question whether to search; general knowledge questions are often answered from what the model learned in training. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Gemini models grounded in Google Search. Developers can switch on the same grounding in the Gemini API. Gemini can also draw on other Google data, such as Maps and Business Profile information for local questions and Shopping data for products. For site owners, that makes Google SEO, an accurate Business Profile and clean product data the foundation of Gemini visibility.
How does each Gemini surface use Google Search?
"Gemini" refers to several products, and each uses Search in its own way:
| Surface | How it uses Google Search | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini app (web and mobile) | Searches when the model decides the question needs it; can also use other Google services | Answers with source links when it has searched |
| AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search | Built on Gemini models customised for Search; retrieve pages from Google's index using core ranking systems, often with query fan-out | Summaries with supporting links |
| Gemini API with grounding | The google_search tool lets the model generate and run searches, then cite results |
Answer text with citations, plus the search queries used |
| Gemini on Android and other devices | Uses the same assistant and search abilities, with device context | Spoken or on-screen answers |
Google introduced AI Overviews in 2024 as powered by a Gemini model customised for Google Search, and Google's documentation describes its AI features as retrieving up-to-date pages from the Search index using core ranking systems.
When does the Gemini app search, and when does it answer from memory?
The model decides. It tends to search for:
- current information: prices, opening hours, recent events, new products;
- specific facts it is unlikely to know reliably, such as details of a small business;
- local questions, which draw on Maps and Business Profile data;
- comparisons and recommendations where up-to-date sources matter.
It tends to answer from memory for general explanations, definitions and well-known facts. Answers from memory have no source links, which is why a Gemini answer about your business can sometimes be outdated: it may not have searched at all. Asking a follow-up such as "check the latest information online" usually makes it search. When the app has searched, it can show links to related sources under the response, so you can see which pages it drew on.
How is the Gemini app different from AI Overviews and AI Mode?
They share Google's index but behave differently:
- Question style: people ask the Gemini app longer, conversational and multi-turn questions; AI Overviews respond to searches typed into Google.
- Searching: AI Overviews and AI Mode always retrieve from Search; the Gemini app sometimes relies on memory.
- Reporting: Search Console's Generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. Visits from the Gemini app show up in analytics as referrals from gemini.google.com.
- Controls: AI Overviews and AI Mode depend on Googlebot, snippet eligibility and the generative AI setting in Search Console; grounding in the Gemini app is also governed by Google-Extended.
What does Google-Extended control?
Google-Extended is a robots.txt token, not a separate crawler. According to Google's documentation, it lets site owners control whether content crawled by Google is used for training Gemini models. It also controls grounding in the Gemini app and in Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI. It does not affect whether a site appears in Google Search or its ranking there.
That creates a real trade-off. Blocking Google-Extended keeps your content out of Gemini training and out of grounded answers in the Gemini app, while you can still appear in Search and its AI features. If Gemini app visibility matters to you, check that your robots.txt does not block Google-Extended, sometimes added by plugins or blanket "block AI" settings. Some large sites deliberately block it; Amazon's robots.txt does, for example.
What other Google data does Gemini draw on?
- Google Maps and Business Profile for local businesses: hours, locations, reviews, photos and attributes.
- Shopping data, built from Merchant Center feeds and product pages, for product questions.
- YouTube for video content and how-to questions.
- Flights, Hotels and other Google services for travel and planning.
For local businesses, this means a Gemini recommendation may rest more on your Business Profile and reviews than on your website. How those signals work is covered in how Google Business Profile reviews and Maps data affect Gemini local recommendations.
How can you see the searches Gemini runs?
In ordinary chats the Gemini app does not list the searches it ran, and Google's Gemini API terms forbid collecting or analysing grounded search results, so the API is not a tracking tool. Use permitted views instead: open the sources the Gemini app shows under an answer when you ask your buyers' questions by hand, use Search Console's Generative AI performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode combined, and work out the narrower searches yourself.
For example, a question such as "which accountant in Leeds is best for a small Shopify store?" is likely to need pages that rank for ecommerce accountants in Leeds, accountant reviews and Shopify accounting services. If your site ranks for none of those narrower searches, that explains a missing citation better than any general audit. Run each question a few times, since the searches can differ between runs, and note the queries that recur.
What does this mean for your Gemini visibility?
- Get Google SEO right. Gemini's grounded answers come from Google's index and rankings.
- Rank for the narrower searches behind your buyers' questions, not only the headline keyword.
- Keep your Business Profile complete and accurate, with genuine reviews, if you serve local customers.
- Keep Merchant Center feeds and product pages consistent if you sell products.
- Check robots.txt for Google-Extended and decide deliberately whether to allow it.
- Put key facts in clear, visible text so they can be quoted accurately.
- Correct outdated information at the source, since memory-based answers repeat it until sources and models are updated.
What to do when Gemini gets your business wrong is covered in whether you can ask Google to correct a false Gemini answer about your business. Checking what it says now is covered in how to check what Gemini says about your business.
What do people ask about Gemini and Google Search?
Does Gemini show the same results as Google Search?
No. It draws on the same index but writes its own answer, may run several searches, and cites a selection of pages rather than showing a ranked list.
If I rank first in Google, will Gemini cite me?
It makes it more likely, but Gemini picks passages that answer each part of the question and may cite pages ranking lower.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews and AI Mode depend on Googlebot, snippet settings and the generative AI setting in Search Console, not Google-Extended.
Why does Gemini give different answers from AI Overviews?
They receive differently worded questions, the Gemini app may answer from memory, and each response is generated fresh, so wording and sources vary.
