How to Check What Gemini Says About Your Business

To check what Gemini says about your business, ask it in a clean session: a Google account with no connection to your business and no personal history, or signed out where available. Ask two kinds of question. Direct ones cover what you do, where and at what price; buyer ones cover who to choose for your service in your area. Run each a few times, open the sources Gemini links, and compare with Google's AI Overviews. Because Gemini draws on Google Search and Google Maps data, most fixes start with your Google Business Profile and the pages that rank for you.

Where does Gemini get information about businesses?

Gemini's answers about a business usually come from a mix of:

  • Google Search results, which Gemini uses to ground answers about current or specific facts;
  • Google Maps and Business Profile data, such as hours, address, categories, reviews and photos, especially for local questions;
  • What the model learned in training, which can be out of date;
  • The user's own context, such as connected Google apps and past activity, when the user has allowed it.

That last point matters for testing. What Gemini tells you, signed in to your own account, may not be what it tells a customer. How much Gemini relies on Google Search is covered in whether Gemini uses Google Search data to generate answers.

How do you run a clean check in Gemini?

  1. Use a separate Google account that has never been used for your business, or a signed-out session where available.
  2. Turn off personal context for the test account: check Gemini's activity and personalisation settings, and do not connect other Google apps.
  3. Set the location to your market, or name the place in the question.
  4. Start a new chat for each question, so earlier questions do not shape later answers.
  5. Ask each question two or three times, and note whether the answers agree.
  6. Save the full answer and any linked sources with the date.

What questions should you ask Gemini about your business?

Type Example questions What it shows
Identity "What is [business name] in [town]?" Whether Gemini recognises you and describes you correctly
Facts "What are [business]'s opening hours?" "How much does [business] charge for [service]?" Wrong or outdated details
Reputation "Is [business] any good?" "What do customers say about [business]?" How reviews are summarised
Buyer questions "Best [service] in [area]", "[Service] near [landmark] open on Sunday" Whether you are recommended, and who is instead
Comparison "[Business] vs [competitor]" How you are positioned
Disambiguation "Tell me about [business], the [industry] company in [town]" Confusion with similar names

The buyer questions matter most, because customers who do not know you yet ask them. Direct questions mainly show whether your facts are right.

How do you see which sources Gemini used?

When Gemini uses Google Search for an answer, it typically shows links to the pages it drew on. Open each one and note:

  • whether it is your own site, your Business Profile, a directory, a review site or a competitor;
  • whether it says what Gemini repeated;
  • whether it is outdated.

If an answer has no sources, it is likely based on the model's own knowledge. Ask again with more specific wording, such as a place or "current", to see whether a search-based answer differs. Wrong facts with no source often come from old information in training data; wrong facts with a source can usually be traced and fixed.

How does connecting your Business Profile to Gemini affect your check?

Google now lets business owners manage their Business Profile through the Gemini web app. According to Google's help centre, when you connect a Business Profile to Gemini Apps, Gemini can help update details such as hours, contact information and action links, and show business insights. At the time of Google's documentation, the feature was rolling out gradually. It required a personal Google account that owns or manages a single verified Business Profile, and was not available in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom.

Two practical points follow:

  • It is useful for fixing facts quickly, such as hours and contact details that Gemini and other Google surfaces show.
  • It is the wrong account to test from. An account connected to your Business Profile gives Gemini context about your business that customers' accounts do not have. Always run visibility checks from a separate, unconnected account.

How is Gemini's answer different from Google's AI Overviews?

Both come from Google and both draw on Google Search, but they are different products:

  • AI Overviews appear inside Google Search results for some searches and cite linked sources beside the summary.
  • The Gemini app is a conversational assistant. It answers follow-up questions, may use Google Maps data directly, and can draw on the user's own context when allowed.

A third Google surface, Ask Maps, rolling out since March 2026, is Gemini inside Google Maps. It answers place questions from Maps data and reviews, and personalises by places the user has searched or saved.

The same question can produce different businesses in each. Check each one from the clean account, and log them separately. For the Overviews side, see how to measure brand visibility in Google AI Overviews.

What should you do if Gemini gets your business wrong?

Work through the Google sources first, because Gemini leans on them:

  1. Google Business Profile: correct hours, categories, services, description, address and phone number. Respond to reviews that contain wrong claims.
  2. Your website: state the facts plainly on the pages that rank for your name and services, and remove or redirect old pages with outdated details. Check that robots.txt does not block Google-Extended: that token controls whether the Gemini app can ground answers on your pages, and some site builders' "block AI crawlers" switches add it.
  3. Directories and listings that rank for your name, which Gemini may cite.
  4. Name consistency: if Gemini uses a different business name from your website, align the name across your site, profile and listings; see why Gemini describes your business under a different name.

Then use Gemini's feedback option on the wrong answer. For whether Google will correct a specific answer, see whether you can ask Google to correct a false Gemini answer. Re-check with the same questions a few weeks after the fixes are live.

How often should you check Gemini?

Monthly is enough for most businesses, plus a check after any change to hours, location, services or name. Businesses in busy local categories, or with a history of wrong answers, may want to check the key buyer questions every two weeks.

Keep a simple log with one row per answer: date, question, account used, location, whether you were named, what was said about you, sources linked and any wrong facts. After three or four checks the log shows which errors persist, which buyer questions you never appear for, and whether your fixes are reaching Gemini.

What do people ask about checking Gemini?

Does Gemini give the same answer as Google Search?

Not always. It uses Google Search, but it writes its own answer and may use Maps data and the user's context. Compare both.

Why does Gemini know my business but never recommend it?

Recognition and recommendation depend on different evidence. Recommendations for buyer questions depend on reviews, listings and the pages that rank for those questions, not just on Gemini knowing you exist.

Can I see what Gemini told my customers?

No. Answers are generated per person, so you cannot see individual conversations. You can check the questions yourself in clean sessions or with a tracking tool, and if you sell products through Google Merchant Center in the US, Canada, Australia, India or New Zealand, its AI performance insights show your brand's visibility in the Gemini app, AI Mode and AI Overviews for shopping searches.

Does schema markup help Gemini describe my business?

It can help Google understand your pages, and so indirectly what Gemini finds, but correct Business Profile data and clear page text matter more; see why Gemini ignores a business and whether schema helps.
