How to Use Browser Tools to Reveal ChatGPT's Search Queries and Fan-Outs

You can reveal ChatGPT's search queries, including the extra "fan-out" searches it runs for one question, with your browser's developer tools: open the Network tab, reload the chat, open the conversation response and search for search_model_queries. The field has come and gone between model versions. Practitioners reported it missing from GPT-5.3 in March 2026, and populated again on GPT-5.6 in August 2026. So check it on a current conversation each time. When it is missing, OpenAI's API with web search reports its queries, and Bing Webmaster Tools shows the queries Copilot used to find your pages.

How does the browser method work?

  1. Open ChatGPT in a desktop browser and start a question that triggers web search.
  2. Open developer tools and go to the Network tab.
  3. Filter requests to the conversation endpoint.
  4. Open the response and search for fields holding search queries, such as search_query or search_model_queries.
  5. Record the queries, which often differ from the user's wording and include several variations.

Reports from March 2026 found the fields empty or missing for GPT-5.3 conversations; by August 2026 practitioners reported them populated again on GPT-5.6. Model defaults change often, so try the steps on a current conversation before relying on them.

What else shows real queries?

Method What you see Limits
OpenAI API with web search The searches the model ran, with cited sources API behaviour can differ from the ChatGPT app
Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report "Grounding queries" that led Copilot to cite your pages Only covers your site and Microsoft's AI features
Manual inference Rewording questions and checking which pages are cited Slower and less precise

Tracking tools can collect query data through the API route in the table's first row. Writesonic found GPT-5.4 averaging about 8.5 searches per prompt in early 2026. Some of those searches targeted specific sites. Treat such figures as snapshots, since they change with each model.

What should you do with the queries?

  • Find the phrases you need to rank for. Assistants often search with different words from the user. Check your pages' rankings for those phrases in the search sources each assistant uses, including Bing.
  • Spot site-specific searches. Queries that target review platforms or particular publishers show which sources the assistant trusts for your category.
  • Fill content gaps. If fan-out queries cover pricing, integrations or comparisons you have not published, those are clear gaps.
  • Group by intent, and add the most common query patterns to your tracking set.

Why ChatGPT searches at all, and when, is covered in how ChatGPT decides when to use its search tools. Finding the intent behind visitors who arrive from ChatGPT is covered in how to find the prompts or intent behind ChatGPT referrals.

What caveats apply?

  • App and API differ. The API may search differently from the ChatGPT app, so confirm important findings with manual checks.
  • Queries vary between runs, so collect several runs before drawing conclusions.
  • Record the model with each capture. Whether the field appears depends on the model version, so note which model answered, and recheck after each model update before trusting an empty result.
  • Terms of use. OpenAI's terms prohibit automatically or programmatically extracting data or output from its services. Inspecting your own session by hand is different from running automated scrapers. Use the API for automated collection.

What might an illustrative use look like?

Consider an illustrative accounting software company whose pages are rarely cited for "best accounting software for contractors". Browser inspection shows the queries only on some runs, so it also runs the question 20 times through OpenAI's API with web search. The queries include "accounting software construction job costing", "QuickBooks alternatives for contractors" and several searches limited to review platforms. The company ranks poorly for "job costing" phrases, and its review profile lacks a construction category. It publishes a job costing page and updates its review profile. It then adds the job costing queries to its tracking. Two months later, its pages appear among the sources for contractor questions in both the API and the app.

What do people ask about ChatGPT's search queries?

Why does the browser method sometimes stop working?

The query data is not a documented feature. It disappeared from the conversation data for GPT-5.3 and reappeared for GPT-5.6, and OpenAI has not explained either change.

Do browser extensions still show fan-outs?

Those that read the browser conversation data stopped working while the field was missing and depend on it staying there. Extensions using the API are less affected.

Are API queries the same as ChatGPT's?

Similar in kind, but not guaranteed to match. Use them for patterns, and check key questions in the app.

Can other assistants show their queries?

Gemini's API reports grounding queries, but its terms do not allow them to be stored or analysed; Bing shows grounding queries for your own site. Some assistants display search steps in their interface.
