Why Is My Brand Missing From Google AI Overviews, and Could I Have Opted Out?

Your brand could be missing from Google AI Overviews because the site has been opted out, but that is rarely the reason. Search Console now has a "Search generative AI" setting that can exclude a site's links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. Google finished rolling it out to all websites on August 31, 2026. Page-level controls such as nosnippet and noindex also limit what can appear. Check those first. More often, the reasons are ordinary: pages that are not indexed, rank low or answer less directly than other sources, or queries that trigger no overview. Opting out does not affect other assistants such as ChatGPT or Perplexity.

How do you check whether you opted out?

  1. Open Search Console and go to Settings, then Search generative AI. The page shows whether your property includes or excludes its content, or inherits the choice from a parent property.
  2. Check parent properties. A domain-level property's setting can apply to subdomain or folder properties that inherit from it.
  3. Check page source for robots meta tags or HTTP headers with nosnippet, max-snippet:0 or noindex, and for data-nosnippet attributes around key content.
  4. Check CMS and SEO plugin settings, which sometimes apply snippet limits sitewide.
  5. Ask colleagues and agencies whether anyone changed these settings. Publishers have used them deliberately, and settings can be copied between properties.

What happens to a website when it opts out of Google AI Overviews?

According to Google's help page for the control, excluding your site means its links and content will not appear in Search generative AI features. It also means your content will not be used to ground the responses in those features. You receive no traffic or impressions from them. The change generally takes a few days to take effect. You can switch back at any time, and the setting's page offers an estimate of how the change may affect your traffic. The control does not stop AI Overviews appearing for searches about your brand. It only stops your site being used or linked in them, so overviews may then describe you using other sources.

Does opting out of Google AI features affect search rankings?

Google says the control is not used as a ranking or inclusion signal affecting other parts of Search. Your regular results should be unaffected. Page-level preview controls are different. Nosnippet and max-snippet also shorten or remove the snippets in regular results, which can lower click-through rates, and noindex removes pages from Search entirely. So the Search Console control is the cleaner way to opt out of AI features only.

Does opting out of Google AI features reduce citations in Perplexity and ChatGPT?

No. Other assistants use their own crawlers and search sources, such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, Perplexity's PerplexityBot and Anthropic's Claude-SearchBot. They are controlled through robots.txt and firewall rules, not Search Console. Google-Extended is also separate. Google's help page says the control does not affect AI training, and points to Google-Extended for limiting the training of models used in its generative features. If you want to stay out of other assistants too, you need their own controls. If you want to appear in them, check that those crawlers are allowed.

Who should consider opting out?

Few businesses gain from it. Most want their pages to be sources for answers about their products and services. The main candidates are publishers whose business depends on people reading full articles, and organisations with licensing arrangements for their content. Others are sites worried about sensitive content being summarised out of context. Even then, partial controls are often better. Data-nosnippet can keep specific sections, such as paywalled parts or sensitive details, out of snippets and AI features while leaving the rest available. Before excluding a whole site, use the traffic estimate on the setting's page. Also remember that overviews about your brand will still appear, built from other people's pages.

If you did not opt out, why is your brand missing?

  • The query does not trigger an overview. Many searches, especially navigational and some transactional ones, show no AI Overview.
  • Your pages are not indexed, or the relevant page is not the one Google indexes.
  • Other pages answer better. Overviews choose passages that answer directly with specifics.
  • Your pages rank low for the searches involved. Ahrefs found 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the same query. Ranking is not required, but it helps.
  • Third-party sources dominate. For comparison and "best" questions, overviews often cite lists, reviews and directories rather than brand sites.
  • Content is hard to read, hidden in scripts, images or PDFs.
  • Regional differences. Overviews vary by country and language, and a different regional page may be cited.

How to be featured more often is covered in how to get featured in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Why a brand appears for its own name but not for buying questions is covered in why a brand appears in brand-name searches but not buyer-intent AI queries.

How do you measure your presence in AI Overviews?

Search Console's generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode for your pages. If it shows none at all, check the opt-out setting and preview controls first. If it shows impressions for some pages but not others, compare those pages. Track a set of important queries with a rank tracker that records AI Overviews, noting whether an overview appears and whether you are cited. Check a sample by hand from the locations your customers search from, since overviews differ by region and change often.

What might an illustrative case look like?

Consider an illustrative specialist travel insurer whose marketing team notices it never appears in AI Overviews, while competitors do. The generative AI performance report in Search Console shows no impressions, or does not appear at all. The Search generative AI setting shows "exclude". A previous agency had switched it on at the parent domain property during a publisher-rights debate, and the insurer's product property inherited it. The team switches the setting to include and checks that no nosnippet tags remain on key pages. A few weeks later, the report shows impressions, and overviews for several cover questions cite the insurer's policy pages. ChatGPT and Perplexity were never affected, because they use separate crawlers.

What do people ask about AI Overviews opt-outs?

Can I opt out of AI Overviews for some pages only?

For a whole section, add a URL-prefix property for that folder in Search Console and set its Search generative AI control to exclude; it overrides the inherited setting and leaves regular snippets alone. For individual pages or passages, use nosnippet or data-nosnippet, bearing in mind they also affect regular snippets.

Does opting out stop AI Overviews appearing for my brand name?

No. It stops your site being used or linked; overviews can still appear using other sources.

Will opting back in restore my visibility immediately?

It generally takes a few days for changes to apply. After that, citations still depend on your pages being among the best sources for each question.

Should publishers opt out?

It depends on whether the traffic and visibility from AI features are worth more than keeping content out of them. The setting's traffic estimate helps with that decision.
