Does Semrush Local Improve AI Confidence by Fixing Business Listings?
Partly. Semrush Local's listing management sends consistent business details to more than 100 directories. Semrush says these include data feeds that inform ChatGPT and Gemini. The tool also finds and suppresses duplicate listings. That makes AI answers less likely to state wrong hours, addresses or phone numbers, which is a real and common problem. It does not make assistants recommend you. Recommendation depends more on reviews, clear service pages and mentions on trusted sites. So listing work raises the accuracy of what AI says about you more than how often it picks you. Listing management is part of the Pro plan, at $60 a month per location billed annually.
What does Semrush Local include?
As listed on Semrush's pricing page and knowledge base:
| Plan | Price | Key features |
|---|---|---|
| Local Base | $30/mo per location, billed annually | GBP AI Agent for posts, review replies and photos; Map Rank Tracker |
| Local Pro | $60/mo per location, billed annually | Adds listing management, review management and generation, advanced GBP management |
| Local Business | Custom, 20+ locations | Custom limits and billing |
Listing management, per Semrush's knowledge base, distributes your details to more than 100 global and local directories, including Bing, Foursquare, Facebook, Yelp, Tripadvisor and Yellow Pages, plus healthcare directories such as WebMD and Vitals for US medical businesses. It then keeps them in sync, applies your edits, monitors for duplicates and collects suggested edits from users for your approval. Semrush also says some of its directories are AI data sources, naming an OpenAI directory that informs ChatGPT search and a Gemini directory.
What does "AI confidence" mean in practice?
AI assistants build answers about local businesses from many sources: your website, map and directory listings, review sites and articles. When those sources agree, the assistant can state your details plainly. When they conflict, it may pick the wrong version, hedge, or leave you out. Independent tests show how often this goes wrong. One London test of 165 businesses, asking ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity more than 13,000 questions, found that 93% had at least one basic fact wrong or missing, and about one answer in ten gave a wrong postcode even when the town was named. Smaller businesses fared worse than larger ones.
Consistent listings reduce the conflicts that cause these errors. That is the confidence listing tools can improve.
Which AI problems can listing fixes solve?
Listing work helps most with facts:
- Wrong hours, phone numbers or addresses, especially after a move or rebrand.
- Closed locations still shown as open, or open ones shown as closed.
- Duplicate listings that split reviews and confuse which address is current.
- Wrong categories or service areas, which can place you in the wrong town or state.
It helps least with selection. When someone asks for the best dentist nearby, the assistant needs reasons to pick you: strong recent reviews, pages that describe each service, and mentions in local guides and "best of" lists. Experts surveyed for Whitespark's 2026 ranking factors put those signals above structured listings for AI visibility. How location errors arise is covered in why AI tools recommend local businesses in the wrong state.
What does the research say about listings and AI citations?
Yext, which sells listings, analysed 6.8 million citations in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for location-based questions in 2025. Listings made up 42% of citations and first-party websites 44%. ChatGPT's answers leaned most on listings, at 48.7% of its citations. The study supports the idea that listings are read and cited often, but it comes from an interested party, and "cited" is not the same as "recommended". Yext's own release notes also say its feed to OpenAI is a blind submission, with no guarantee the data is used. The same caution applies to any tool's AI directory feeds. More on that is in whether paying for Yext guarantees AI visibility.
What should you fix first?
Not every listing matters equally. Work in this order:
- Your own website. Put the name, address, phone number, hours and service area in plain text on every location page, not only in images or scripts. AI systems read your site directly, and Yext's research found first-party pages cited as often as listings.
- The big platforms. Google Business Profile, Apple Business, Bing Places and Yelp feed maps, voice assistants and, in Yelp's case, ChatGPT through a data licence.
- Industry directories your customers use, such as health, legal or trade directories.
- Duplicates and old addresses, which cause more AI errors than a missing minor listing.
- Aggregators and smaller directories, which a tool such as Semrush Local handles in bulk.
Is Semrush Local worth it?
It depends on your locations and how often details change:
- Worth it: multi-location businesses, businesses that change hours or services often, and those with duplicate or messy listings. At $60 a location per month, 10 locations cost $7,200 a year.
- Often unnecessary: a single location with stable details. The profiles that matter most, on Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and two or three industry sites, can be kept up to date by hand in an afternoon each quarter. One-time services, such as Whitespark's listings packages, are another route.
- Good value if you already use Semrush, since local tools sit beside your SEO and AI visibility data.
Other listing platforms are compared in the Vendasta review, and a local toolset comparison is in Whitespark vs AEO Engine vs Semrush.
How do you measure whether it helped?
Measure accuracy and inclusion separately, before and after:
- Write ten questions per location, half factual (opening hours, address, whether you offer a service) and half choice-based (the best provider nearby).
- Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode, set to the right city, three times each.
- Score factual answers as right, wrong or missing, and choice answers as named or not named.
- Fix listings, then wait four to eight weeks for directories and AI sources to update.
- Repeat the same questions and compare.
Expect factual accuracy to improve first. If inclusion does not move, the gap is reviews, content or local mentions, not data. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit can track prompts at scale, but it works at domain level, so per-location checks are still best done by hand.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative chain of five physiotherapy clinics, Trellstead Physio, which had moved two clinics in the past year. A manual check found assistants giving an old address for one clinic in most answers, and Perplexity listing a closed branch. Trellstead switched to Semrush Local Pro, which found and suppressed four duplicate listings and updated details across its directories. Six weeks later, the old address had gone from most answers. Its clinics were still named in only a few "best physio near me" answers, so the team turned to reviews and a page for each treatment.
