Semrush AI Suite vs Writesonic, AirOps and Surfer for AI Visibility

Semrush is the broadest suite here. It combines AI visibility tracking, a prompt research database and full SEO data, from $99 a month for its AI toolkit or $199 for Semrush One. Writesonic combines daily tracking on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews with AI articles and site audits, from $79 a month billed annually. AirOps is a content engineering platform that turns AI and search data into automated content workflows, priced by the tasks those workflows run. Surfer is a content optimiser that has added an AI tracker. Choose Semrush when research and measurement matter most, and one of the others when producing and updating content is your bottleneck.

What does Semrush's AI suite offer?

Semrush's AI features span several products. The AI Visibility Toolkit, at $99 a month per domain, tracks 25 prompts daily in ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini, runs weekly Brand Performance reports on sentiment and narratives across four AI platforms, and includes Prompt Research on a database of more than 317 million prompts. Semrush One bundles that with the SEO toolkit from $199 a month. Semrush Enterprise's AIO product adds market, city and product-level tracking. The strength is breadth of data; the gap is production, since Semrush tells you what to fix more than it fixes it. More detail is in the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit review.

What does Writesonic offer?

Writesonic has moved from AI writing into AI visibility. Its self-serve plans track ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews daily: Starter covers 50 prompts with 50 answers a day, Basic at $199 a month covers 100 prompts with 300 answers a day, and Growth at $399 covers 200 prompts with 600 answers a day and adds sentiment. Each plan includes AI articles, from 15 a month on Starter to 50 on Growth, and site audits. Enterprise tracks ten AI platforms and adds an Action Center for on-page and off-page actions, custom regions and languages, and commerce features. Its answer allowances matter: 50 answers a day on Starter is fewer than 50 prompts on three engines would need, so check how prompts are rotated. More is in the Writesonic GEO review.

What do AirOps and Surfer offer?

AirOps is built for teams that need to produce and refresh a lot of content. Its workflows and agents create briefs and drafts, refresh pages and fill gaps, guided by a Brand Kit, while Insights tracks citations and share of voice and Offsite manages third-party placements. Pricing is based on tasks, with Solo and Pro plans that start free and custom Enterprise terms.

Surfer is best known for its Content Editor, which scores drafts against top-ranking pages. Its AI Tracker and AI Search Analytics add prompt tracking, with more engines and daily updates on higher tiers. It suits writers who want AI visibility data inside the tool they already use to write.

How these two compare with dedicated trackers is covered in Scrunch vs Peec vs AirOps vs Surfer.

What does each answer cost for tracking?

For tracking alone, dividing the entry price by the answers collected each month:

  • Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: 25 prompts × 3 engines × 30 days = 2,250 answers for $99, about 4.4 cents each.
  • Writesonic Starter: 50 answers a day, about 1,500 a month, for $79 billed annually, about 5.3 cents each.
  • Writesonic Basic: 300 answers a day, about 9,000 a month, for $199, about 2.2 cents each.

These figures ignore what else each plan includes: Semrush's research and SEO data, Writesonic's articles and audits. A tool that produces the fixes can be worth more per answer than one that only measures.

Which should you choose?

  • Semrush if you need research data, SEO context and measurement in one place, and have writers to act on it.
  • Writesonic if you want tracking and AI-drafted content together at a mid-market price, focused on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews.
  • AirOps if content volume is the bottleneck and you need governed, repeatable workflows.
  • Surfer if your team writes for search already and wants AI tracking beside its editor.

Many teams pair Semrush for measurement with one production tool. Avoid paying for two sets of tracking unless each serves a different team. Other Semrush comparisons include Semrush AI toolkit vs Peec AI and Writesonic vs Profound.

How should you run a trial?

Test the tools on the same work, not on their demos:

  1. Pick 20 prompts that matter to your buyers, and track them in two tools for two weeks.
  2. Compare the answers each tool records with what you see when you ask the same questions yourself.
  3. Give each production tool the same brief, such as refreshing one existing page, and time how long an editor needs to make the draft publishable.
  4. Count seats, projects and markets you will actually need, since entry plans often allow one user and one project.
  5. Price the annual and monthly options side by side, as Writesonic's annual discount is 20%.

The tool that saves the most editing time is often worth more than the one with the lowest tracking cost.

What should you watch out for with AI-drafted content?

All three production tools can draft content quickly. AI answers reward pages that are specific, accurate and original, so drafts need editing: add first-hand details, current figures and clear sources, and remove generic filler. Check facts against your own records before publishing, and keep a human editor responsible for each page.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative accounting firm network with 12 regional offices. It used Semrush One for keyword and prompt research, and found that AI answers about "small business tax deadlines" in each region cited national guides rather than its local offices. Its two-person content team could not write regional pages fast enough, so it trialled Writesonic for drafts and tracking, then moved to AirOps workflows to produce and refresh 12 regional deadline pages each quarter, each checked by a local accountant before publishing.

What do people ask about these tools?

Is Semrush enough for AI visibility on its own?

For measurement and research, often yes. For producing content at scale, many teams add a writing or workflow tool.

Which tracks the most engines at entry?

Semrush and Writesonic both cover three engines at entry; AirOps Pro covers seven or more.

Does Writesonic write content as well as track?

Yes. Its plans include AI articles and site audits alongside tracking.

Which is cheapest?

Writesonic's Starter at $79 a month billed annually, or Semrush's toolkit at $99, depending on what you need.
