Why Do AI Local Recommendations Differ From Map Rankings?
Because they use different inputs to answer a different question. Google's map results rank Business Profiles by relevance, distance and prominence around the searcher's location, and show a ranked set. AI assistants build a short answer from the sources they retrieve, such as business websites, directories, reviews and articles. They often know the searcher's location only roughly. The gap is large. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of multi-location brands' locations, while 35.9% appeared in Google's local 3-pack. A business can rank first on the map and be absent from ChatGPT, or the reverse. Treat them as two related channels that share much of the same groundwork.
How do map rankings and AI recommendations differ?
| Google map rankings | AI recommendations | |
|---|---|---|
| Main input | Business Profiles and Google's local signals | Retrieved web pages, directories, reviews and, for Google's AI, Maps data |
| Location | The searcher's location, usually precise on mobile | Often approximate, unless the user shares precise location or names a place |
| Output | A ranked list or map of many businesses | A short answer naming one to a few businesses |
| Query | Short: "plumber near me" | Often longer, with qualifiers: "plumber who does weekend call-outs in Leeds" |
| Consistency | Fairly stable for a given place and query | Can change between runs of the same prompt |
Why do the two lists differ?
- Different sources. Google's map results come from Business Profiles. ChatGPT and Perplexity have no direct access to Business Profiles. BrightLocal's December 2024 study of 800 ChatGPT local searches found its sources were business websites (58%), mentions of businesses in articles and lists (27%) and directories (15%). A strong profile with a thin website and few directory listings can rank on the map and be invisible in ChatGPT. More on its selection is in how ChatGPT chooses which local businesses to recommend.
- Google's AI is closer to the map. Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews draw on Google Maps data. In BrightLocal's 2026 analysis of 1.9 million local AI citations, Business Profiles made up 28.5% of citations across Google's AI features and ChatGPT. SOCi found Gemini recommended 11% of locations, far more than ChatGPT.
- Shortlists, not rankings. An AI answer names a few businesses, so ranking fourth on the map can mean being absent from the answer. See why AI assistants recommend only one or a few businesses.
- Qualifiers change the match. People ask assistants for specifics, such as "open late", "good with anxious dogs" or "does emergency call-outs". The businesses that match are those whose websites, reviews and listings say so in words the assistant can find.
- Review strength. SOCi found locations ChatGPT recommended averaged 4.3 stars. Rating and review content count for more when the assistant is choosing just a few.
- Data gaps and errors. SOCi reported accuracy problems, especially in ChatGPT and Perplexity, which lack one central location source like Google Maps. Wrong addresses and closed branches creep in.
How does distance from the searcher change AI business recommendations?
On the map, distance is one of Google's three main local ranking factors, alongside relevance and prominence, and it is measured from where the searcher is. AI assistants handle location less precisely:
- ChatGPT may estimate a general location, such as country, state or city, from the user's IP address. Users can manage location sharing under Settings, Data controls, Location, and enabling it allows precise location. On iOS, device location is off by default. Without precise location, "near me" is often read as "in this city".
- Named places override guesses. When a prompt names a neighbourhood or town, the assistant looks for businesses tied to that place in its sources. A business just over a boundary may be left out, even if it is closer.
- Google's AI features use Google's own location signals and Maps data, so their local answers tend to follow the map more closely.
The practical effects are that businesses in the centre of a city, or those widely described as serving a named area, are favoured over businesses that are simply nearest. Service-area businesses that never name the places they serve on their website can miss out. Wrong-location errors are covered in why AI tools recommend local businesses in the wrong state.
No public study has measured how much distance affects ChatGPT's picks. Grid-based trackers now sample AI answers at points across a map, which is the most direct way to see it for your own business. One example is covered in the Local Falcon review.
Should local businesses prioritize Google Map Pack rankings over AI search visibility?
For most local businesses today, the map still brings more customers. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found 71% of consumers used Google to find local businesses, while 45% had used AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. In a separate BrightLocal survey, 82% of people who used AI for local recommendations went to Google to confirm them. The map remains where many decisions are finished.
But the choice is not either-or. Map rankings and Google's AI answers share the same Business Profile data, and the work that earns ChatGPT recommendations also strengthens prominence on the map: reviews, citations in directories, and coverage in local articles. A sensible order is to fix the profile first, then build the sources outside Google. How AI features are changing the local pack itself is covered in whether AI results are replacing map packs.
Should local businesses prioritize local SEO and Google Business Profile over GEO?
For a local business, most of GEO is local SEO extended to more places. The Business Profile feeds Google's map, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini. The rest of the work reaches assistants that have no direct access to the profile:
- Your website: a page for each main service and area, with hours, prices where possible, and the specifics people ask about.
- Other listings: Bing Places for Copilot, Apple Business for Siri and Apple Maps, Yelp and your sector's directories for ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Reviews: keep asking every customer for an honest review in their own words on Google and other platforms that allow requests (never Yelp, which forbids asking).
- Local coverage: local news, community sites and "best of" lists that name you.
- Checking answers: ask the assistants your customers use, with the qualifiers they use.
If budget is tight, spend most of it on the profile and website, which serve both channels, and add the listings and checks that only AI needs. The detail is in how local SEO signals affect Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT recommendations.
What should you track?
- Map rank across a grid of points around your location, for your main queries.
- AI mention rate for the same needs, asked the way customers ask, with qualifiers, across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and Perplexity.
- Location variation: test prompts naming your town, nearby towns and neighbourhoods.
- Repeat runs, since single AI answers vary.
- Sources cited when you are missing, to see which listings or articles your competitors have and you lack.
We have not run our own study comparing map ranks with AI recommendations. The figures above come from SOCi's and BrightLocal's published research, and the location behaviour from OpenAI's help pages.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative dog groomer, Norvoway Grooming, ranked first on the map across most of its town. In ChatGPT, questions like "dog groomer for anxious dogs in Hartfield" named two competitors instead. Their websites had pages on handling nervous dogs, and one was featured in a local parenting blog's roundup. Norvoway's site had a single page listing prices. The owner added pages on nervous dogs, large breeds and hand-drying, listed the business on Yelp and Bing Places, and began asking every customer for an honest review. Within two months, ChatGPT named Norvoway in about half of the runs of that question, while its map rank stayed the same.
What do people ask about AI and map rankings?
Why am I first on Google Maps but not in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT has no direct access to your Business Profile. It relies on your website, directories, reviews and articles.
Do AI assistants use my exact location?
ChatGPT often estimates a general location from the user's IP address, unless the user enables location sharing, which allows precise location.
Is Gemini closer to Google Maps than ChatGPT is?
Yes. Gemini draws on Google Maps data, and SOCi found it recommended far more locations than ChatGPT.
Should I stop working on map rankings?
No. The map still drives many local decisions, and the profile also feeds Google's AI features.
