Will Direct Offers in Google AI Mode Affect Organic Product Recommendations?
Not directly, as far as Google has said, but they change what surrounds the organic picks. Direct Offers is a Google Ads format, piloted since January 2026, that lets advertisers show exclusive deals, such as 20% off, to shoppers in AI Mode who look ready to buy. In May 2026 Google said it would extend them from the AI Mode product viewer into the answer itself, with Gemini-built bundles and native checkout. Google labels its ads in AI Mode “Sponsored” and has long said it does not accept payment to rank organic results higher. It has not said that Direct Offers change which products AI Mode recommends organically. The real effect is competition for attention beside the organic choices.
How do Direct Offers work?
According to Google's announcements:
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Exclusive offers | Advertisers present deals, such as a percentage discount, to high-intent shoppers in AI Mode |
| Placement | Began in the AI Mode product viewer; expanding to the AI Mode answer during exploration |
| Promotion bundling | Brands upload discounts, giveaways and local coupons with eligible products and guardrails; Gemini builds a deal for the specific search |
| Setup | AI Max and Performance Max advertisers create Direct Offers in Google Ads, with value limits to control spend |
| Checkout | Being paired with native checkout in AI Mode |
| Travel | Coming for hotel booking rates |
Google named Chewy, Gap and L'Oréal among brands using the pilot, and at launch mentioned e.l.f. Cosmetics, Samsonite, Rugs USA and Shopify merchants among early partners. Google decides when an offer is relevant enough to show.
Free product listings versus paid Shopping ads in Google AI Mode
AI Mode's shopping answers draw on Google's Shopping Graph, which includes free product listings from Merchant Center. Paid formats sit alongside them:
| Free listings (organic) | Paid formats | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Merchant Center feeds and product data in the Shopping Graph | Shopping, Performance Max and AI Max campaigns |
| Cost | Free | Pay per click or conversion |
| Label | None | “Sponsored” |
| How chosen | Relevance and quality of product data, pages and reviews | Auction, relevance and quality |
| AI Mode formats | Product results and recommendations | Shopping ads, Highlighted Answers in recommendation lists, Direct Offers |
Highlighted Answers, announced at the same event, let relevant ads appear inside AI Mode's lists of recommendations, labelled “Sponsored”. For shoppers, that makes the line between a recommendation and an ad visually thinner, even though it remains labelled.
Will Direct Offers affect organic recommendations?
Three distinctions help:
- Ranking. Google has not said ad spend or offers influence the organic selection, and its standing position is that payment does not buy organic ranking. We have no evidence otherwise.
- Attention. A discounted product with a Buy option sits next to your organic listing. Shoppers compare, and a deal can win the click even when your product was the better organic match.
- Price perception. If competitors routinely offer AI Mode discounts, your standard price may look high in the same answer, even if it is fair.
Early reports from merchants of falling orders from Google organic search have many possible causes, including AI answers reducing clicks overall, as covered in whether AI search is reducing organic traffic. Separate the effects before blaming ads.
How can you protect organic visibility?
- Keep your Merchant Center data excellent. Complete titles, attributes, GTINs, prices, stock, shipping and returns. That is what organic product results draw on.
- Use free Merchant Center promotions where they fit. They are separate from Direct Offers and can make a free listing more competitive.
- Win on product page substance: clear comparisons, sizing, use cases and honest reviews, which AI Mode can use when explaining choices.
- Watch how questions are phrased. Buyer wording shapes which products appear, as covered in whether buyer phrasing changes AI recommendations.
- Consider checkout readiness, since native checkout is spreading across AI Mode, as covered in Google's UCP setup requirements.
- Measure both channels. Track impressions from Google's AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode combined) in Search Console's generative AI report and Merchant Center's AI performance insights, and compare with paid results if you test Direct Offers.
Trying to buy influence outside Google's ad products is a different matter, covered in whether Google warns against buying brand mentions.
How do ads already appear around AI answers?
Direct Offers joins ad placements that already exist. According to Google Ads help, existing text, Shopping and Performance Max ads can show above or below AI Overviews in all the 200-plus markets where AI Overviews are available. Ads inside AI Overviews are available in English in a smaller list of countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, India and several others. Google shows them when it detects commercial intent and has relevant, high-quality ads, and they come from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns rather than a separate buy. The May 2026 formats, Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, extend the same idea into AI Mode.
What data can you see?
Reporting is still thin. Google Ads reports ads shown inside AI Overviews as Top Ads, without a separate segment. Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, but not clicks or queries. Merchant Center's AI performance insights show how products are discovered through AI experiences. Put the three side by side monthly, and treat any conclusion about ads displacing organic results as a hypothesis to test rather than a fact.
Should you test Direct Offers?
Consider it if you already run Performance Max or AI Max for products with healthy margins, compete in categories where shoppers compare deals, and can set strict value limits. Measure incremental sales, not just attributed ones: a discount given to someone who would have bought anyway is a cost, not a win. Start with a limited set of products for a few weeks, and compare them with similar products left without offers. Brands with thin margins or strong organic positions may gain more from better product data than from discounts.
We have not run Direct Offers campaigns, and Google has not published data on how they interact with organic results. This page is based on Google's January and May 2026 announcements, its Direct Offers product page and Google Ads help.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative luggage brand, Portway, that appeared organically in AI Mode answers for “durable carry-on for international flights”. A competitor began running Direct Offers with 15% off, shown in the same answer. Portway's organic position held, but its click-through from AI Mode fell. The team improved its Merchant Center data with airline size-compliance details, added a free Merchant Center promotion for its best seller, and ran a small Direct Offers test with a value limit. It kept the paid test only for the models where incremental sales covered the discount.
