What Is Google AI Mode, and How Does Its Conversational Search Experience Work?
AI Mode is Google's conversational AI search. You ask a question by text, voice, image or file, and it answers in its own words with links to the web. You can then keep asking follow-up questions in the same thread. Behind the scenes it uses what Google calls "query fan-out": it splits your question into subtopics, searches for each one at the same time, and combines the results into one answer. It runs on Google's Gemini models, with Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default since May 2026. It is available in more than 200 countries and territories, and it passed one billion monthly users a year after launch. For websites, every subtopic search is a chance to be cited.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews and regular search?
Google describes AI Mode as its most powerful AI search experience, expanding what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning and ways of interacting. The three experiences sit side by side:
| Regular results | AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you see | Ranked links and features | A short AI summary above the results, with links | A full AI answer with links, in a separate conversational view |
| When it appears | Every search | When Google's systems judge it helpful | When you choose it, or continue from an AI Overview |
| Follow-ups | New searches | Since 2026, a follow-up flows into AI Mode | Built in, with context kept across the conversation |
| Input | Text, voice, image | Text, voice, image | Text, voice, images and files |
| Search method | One query | A summary drawn from search results | Query fan-out across subtopics |
You reach AI Mode through google.com/ai, the AI Mode option on the results page, or the AI Mode button in the Google app. Since Google I/O in May 2026, a new search box also lets people move from an AI Overview straight into a back-and-forth with AI Mode. How AI Overviews work on their own is covered in what Google AI Overviews are and how they work.
How does query fan-out work?
Google's help page explains that AI Mode divides a question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously, across multiple data sources, then brings those results together into an easy-to-understand response. A question such as "Is a heat pump worth it for a 1930s semi in Leeds?" might be broken into searches about heat pump efficiency in older homes, insulation requirements, installation costs, grants and running costs compared with gas.
Two things follow for websites. First, the answer draws on pages that rank for the subtopics, not only the original question, so a page that answers one piece well can be cited even if it would never rank for the full question. Second, AI Mode relies on Google Search's index and ranking systems, which Google says keeps responses supported by high-quality web content. When Google's confidence in an AI answer is not high enough, AI Mode may show a set of web links instead.
What does "conversational" mean in practice?
You can keep asking in the same thread, and AI Mode keeps the context. Ask about heat pumps, then "what grants are there?", and it understands you mean heat pump grants for that house. With search history turned on, you can return to earlier conversations. For signed-in users aged 18 and over with history and personalised recommendations on, Personal Intelligence can draw on past searches and activity to tailor answers. Google expanded it in May 2026 to nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages, with no subscription needed.
AI Mode can also answer with more than text. Subscribers to Google's AI plans can use Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode, with daily limits, for harder questions, interactive visuals and simulations. Google has added agentic features: booking services and local experiences with direct links to finish booking through the provider, shopping help, and, for Pro and Ultra subscribers, information agents that monitor the web for changes. Writing for this kind of back-and-forth is covered in how to write conversational content for ChatGPT and AI search.
How big is AI Mode?
Large and growing fast. Google said at I/O in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users in its first year, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch. It expanded to more than 200 countries and territories and dozens of languages in October 2025, with Gemini 3.5 Flash becoming the default model globally in May 2026.
How does AI Mode show up in Search Console?
AI Mode traffic is counted in Search Console's performance reports. Google's help page on impressions says AI Mode groups a question into subtopics and searches each simultaneously, and that a link shown in AI Mode counts as an impression; clicks count as usual. A follow-up question is treated as a new query. Since June 2026, Search Console has also offered a generative AI report showing impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device, though without the queries or answer text. Tools that track AI Mode directly, typically with the udm=50 parameter that opens AI Mode, are compared in how AI Mode tracking tools work.
What does AI Mode mean for your website?
Four practical points:
- Cover the subtopics, not just the headline question. For each important topic, list the sub-questions a fan-out would search, such as costs, requirements, comparisons and local rules, and make sure a page answers each one clearly.
- Keep standard SEO in good shape. AI Mode uses Google's index and ranking systems. Pages that cannot be crawled, indexed or trusted are much less likely to be cited.
- Give people a reason to click. Pages that offer what an answer cannot, such as a price list, a booking page or a full guide, are the ones worth visiting after reading an AI answer. How far AI features reduce clicks is discussed in how much Google AI Overviews and AI Mode reduce organic clicks.
- Use the controls you have. Google documents nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet for limiting what can be shown, and a Search Console setting that excludes a site from AI features entirely, at the cost of losing those links.
Getting cited in the first place is covered in how to get featured in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
What are AI Mode's limits?
Google itself says that, as with any early-stage AI product, AI Mode does not always get it right, and asks users to give feedback with thumbs up or down. Answers can differ between users because of personalisation and between runs of the same question. It is also not a replacement for primary sources on medical, legal or financial decisions. For businesses, the practical limit is visibility: Search Console reports impressions, but not the exact answers in which you appeared, so checking your key questions by hand remains necessary.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative home energy advice site, Praxnell. It ranked well for "heat pump cost" but was rarely cited in AI Mode answers to longer questions about specific homes. Mapping likely fan-out subtopics showed gaps: no page on heat pumps in solid-wall houses, and an outdated grants page. Praxnell added a solid-wall guide, updated the grants page with current scheme rules and dates, and linked both from its cost guide. Its Search Console generative AI report later showed rising AI impressions for the new pages, and manual checks found them cited in AI Mode answers about older homes.
What do people ask about Google AI Mode?
Is AI Mode free?
Yes. AI Mode is free in Search. Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers get extra features such as Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode.
Which model powers AI Mode?
Google's Gemini models. Gemini 3.5 Flash became the default in AI Mode globally in May 2026.
Does AI Mode link to websites?
Yes. Answers include links to the web, and Google may show a set of links when it is not confident in an AI answer.
Does a follow-up question count as a new search?
In Search Console, yes. Google treats a follow-up in AI Mode as a new query.
