Authoritas vs SE Ranking vs Semrush: Which SEO Tool Covers More AI Sources?

No single tool covers every AI source, and each of these three covers a different slice. Authoritas offers the widest choice of models for your own questions. It includes plain language models answering from training data, and search-enabled models that show their sources, all driven by questions generated from a map of your topics, personas and buying factors. SE Ranking tracks your prompts daily in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and classifies the sources those answers cite by type. Semrush has the largest research database, and tracks ChatGPT, AI Mode and Gemini prompts daily, with Perplexity covered in its weekly brand reports. Which covers "more" depends on whether you mean AI engines, cited sources or research data.

What does "AI sources" mean?

Two things, and the tools differ on each:

  • AI engines covered: which assistants and AI search features the tool queries, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews.
  • Cited sources analysed: which websites and pages those answers draw on, and how well the tool helps you see and act on them.

A tool can cover many engines but analyse sources only for some, or cover few engines with deep source analysis.

How do they compare?

Based on each vendor's site and help pages, and independent reviews where the vendor does not publish a detail:

What is distinctive about Authoritas?

Authoritas approaches AI visibility as a research exercise. You build a map of your market: topics, customer personas and the key factors they care about, such as price, quality or sustainability. Authoritas then generates hundreds of targeted questions from that map and sends them to the models you choose. You can run the analysis once or schedule it daily, weekly or monthly.

Its model choice is its main strength for coverage. It separates standard models, which answer from what they learned in training, from search-enabled models, which search the web and cite sources. That lets you see both what a model "believes" about your brand and what it finds when it searches. The Sources tab fills only when search-enabled models are used, and search-grounded queries cost twice the credits of standard ones on enterprise plans. You see the full text of each answer, the brands mentioned alongside you, and the tone.

What is distinctive about SE Ranking?

SE Ranking is the most practical for daily tracking of your own prompts across Google's two AI features, ChatGPT and Perplexity, at a mid-market price. Its source analysis groups cited domains and URLs by type, such as media, blogs and forums, across several markets and languages, which helps decide whether to pursue press, content or community work. Prompts come bundled with its SEO plans, so costs stay fixed within your limits. More is in SE Ranking's AI visibility tracker features and pricing.

What is distinctive about Semrush?

Semrush's coverage is widest in research. Its prompt database of more than 317 million prompts, drawn from AI clickstream data and Google's keyword data, lets you study topics, brands and cited domains beyond your own tracked prompts. For your own prompts, daily tracking covers ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini, and AI Overviews appear in Position Tracking. Perplexity appears in its weekly Brand Performance reports rather than in daily prompt tracking. Semrush Enterprise's AIO product adds market, city and product-level tracking. How it compares with SE Ranking is covered in SE Ranking vs Semrush.

So which covers more?

  • Most engines for your own questions: Authoritas, with the widest model choice, including training-data answers.
  • Best daily coverage of Google's AI features plus ChatGPT and Perplexity: SE Ranking.
  • Most research data on the wider market: Semrush.
  • Common gaps across all three: Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek are covered patchily or not at all, so check them if they matter in your market.

For source analysis, SE Ranking's typing of sources is the most directly actionable, Authoritas shows sources per model where search is enabled, and Semrush is strongest for researching cited domains across a whole topic.

Can one tool ever cover everything?

Not today. Coverage gaps come from how the tools collect answers. Some assistants are easier to query at scale than others, some offer developer APIs that behave differently from their apps, and new assistants appear faster than tools add them. Each vendor also chooses where to invest: Authoritas in model breadth and research design, SE Ranking in affordable daily tracking, Semrush in research data. Expect to combine a primary tool with occasional manual checks on the engines it misses, and review your engine list every six months as usage shifts. The Semrush Enterprise option is covered in the Semrush Enterprise AIO review.

How should you choose?

  1. List the engines your buyers use, from customer questions and analytics referrals.
  2. Decide whether training-data answers matter. If assistants' built-in knowledge of your brand is wrong or thin, Authoritas' standard-model analysis is useful.
  3. Decide whether you need daily tracking of specific prompts or periodic research across a market.
  4. Check the source view each tool gives on a sample of your prompts.
  5. Price your real set-up, including credits for search-grounded queries in Authoritas.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative footwear brand, Tamberlo. Authoritas' persona map, covering runners, commuters and nurses, generated 300 questions. Standard models described Tamberlo mainly as a budget brand, while search-enabled models cited recent reviews praising its comfort. SE Ranking then tracked 100 of the most valuable questions daily, and its source typing showed forums and running blogs dominating Perplexity's answers. The brand used Semrush's database to find related topics it had not yet covered. Each tool answered a different question.

What do people ask about these tools?

Does Semrush track Perplexity?

Yes, in its weekly Brand Performance reports. Its daily Prompt Tracking covers ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini.

Does SE Ranking show which sources AI cites?
