SE Ranking vs Semrush for Combining SERP and AI Search Insights

SE Ranking and Semrush both put Google rankings and AI visibility in one account, but they split the work differently. SE Ranking is cheaper for tracking your own prompts: its Core plan, at $129 a month, includes 2,000 keywords and 100 daily prompts across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, with the answer text for each. Semrush One Starter costs $199 for 500 keywords and 50 prompts. It adds weekly Brand Performance reports that analyse the words and framings AI platforms use about your brand. Neither fully covers phrasing on your own Perplexity prompts. Choose SE Ranking for volume per dollar, and Semrush for narrative analysis and research data.

How does each put rankings and AI answers side by side?

Semrush builds AI tracking into its existing rank tracker. Position Tracking shows Google rankings and AI Overview appearances for your keywords. Prompt Tracking works the same way for AI engines, and its Devices & Locations tab lets you compare a prompt's AI results with Google, Bing or Baidu rankings side by side. One quirk to know: when your page is cited in an AI Overview, Position Tracking records it as position 1, whatever its organic rank.

SE Ranking runs AI tracking in its AI Search toolkit, within the same account as its rank tracker. Each engine has its own tracker, showing brand mentions, links, where they rank inside the answer, and the sources cited. Its AI Mode tracker adds sources by type and average link position.

In practice, Semrush's single interface makes it quicker to see a keyword's organic rank and AI presence together. SE Ranking gives more keywords and prompts for the money, and more engines for your own prompts.

SE Ranking vs Semrush for tracking how ChatGPT and Perplexity phrase brand mentions

A mention count tells you whether you appear. Phrasing tells you how: "a budget option", "best for small teams", or "known for billing errors". Here the two tools differ most.

What you need SE Ranking Semrush
The answer text for your own ChatGPT prompts Yes, the tracker captures actual responses Yes, as a snapshot of the actual result in Prompt Tracking
The answer text for your own Perplexity prompts Yes, answer texts in the Perplexity tracker Not in Prompt Tracking, which covers ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini
Analysis of the words used about you Review responses by hand to see how you are framed Brand Performance shows the words, phrases and framings used, business drivers and feature descriptions
Sentiment Sentiment trends in the AI Search add-on's dashboard; not on the per-engine tracker pages Favourable versus general sentiment, per platform, weekly
Whose questions Your prompts Semrush's question set for your market and language, weekly

So each tool covers half the job. SE Ranking gives you the raw answers for your own prompts on both ChatGPT and Perplexity, but leaves the reading to you. Semrush analyses phrasing and sentiment for you, including on Perplexity, but on its own question set rather than your prompts. Semrush says the Brand Performance panel shows the full, unedited AI response, so you can check its analysis against the source text.

How can you track phrasing with either tool?

Keep a simple descriptor log alongside whichever tool you use. Once a month, for your 20 most important prompts:

  1. Copy the sentence that names your brand from the ChatGPT and Perplexity answers.
  2. Note the descriptor: the label or claim attached to you, such as "affordable", "enterprise-grade" or "limited integrations".
  3. Note who appears beside you, and how they are described.
  4. Note the cited source closest to that sentence, if any.
  5. Compare with your positioning. Mark each descriptor as accurate, outdated or wrong.

After three months, the log shows which descriptions persist and which sources they come from. Semrush users can check the log against Brand Performance. SE Ranking users will find it fills the gap left by the lack of narrative reports.

Which gives more SERP insight?

Both are full SEO suites, so the SERP side is strong in each. Semrush has the larger research data, including its prompt database, which it puts at more than 317 million prompts across 42 geographic databases, and a Prompt Research tool built on it. SE Ranking offers more tracked keywords per dollar, which matters most for agencies and sites with large keyword sets. For AI Overview tracking specifically, see Semrush vs SE Ranking vs BrightEdge for tracking Google AI Overviews.

What does the same job cost?

Take 1,500 keywords and 100 prompts tracked daily:

  • SE Ranking Core: $129 a month covers both, with 500 keywords to spare.
  • Semrush One: Starter covers only 500 keywords and 50 prompts. You would need Pro+ at $299 for 100 prompts, and should check its keyword limit against your 1,500.

For 200 prompts, SE Ranking's Growth plan or an AI Search add-on is still likely cheaper than Semrush One Advanced at $549. Semrush earns its premium if you use Brand Performance, Prompt Research and its wider research data every month.

Who should choose which?

  • SE Ranking: agencies and in-house teams that want many keywords and prompts, Perplexity tracking on their own prompts, and the lowest cost per tracked answer.
  • Semrush: teams that want narrative and sentiment analysis without building it themselves, and that already rely on Semrush research data.
  • Either, plus a descriptor log: teams whose main worry is how assistants describe them, not whether they appear.

Other combinations are compared in Authoritas vs SE Ranking vs Semrush and whether Semrush One combines traditional SEO and AI visibility tracking. SE Ranking's plans are covered in more detail in SE Ranking's AI visibility tracker features and pricing.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative invoicing software company, Tallyline, tracking 80 prompts. In SE Ranking, it appeared in about half of ChatGPT and Perplexity answers, a figure that looked healthy. Its descriptor log told a different story. In both engines, the sentence naming Tallyline often called it "a simple tool for freelancers", although the company had moved to mid-sized businesses a year earlier. The nearest cited sources were two older comparison articles. Semrush's Brand Performance, trialled for a month, showed the same "freelancer" framing across its own question set. Tallyline updated its product pages, asked both publishers to refresh their comparisons, and kept tracking the descriptor rather than the mention rate.
