BrightEdge vs Semrush vs Ahrefs: Which SEO Tools Show AI Agent Citations?

All three now show both halves of the picture: where AI answers cite your pages, and which AI agents fetch your site. BrightEdge's AI Catalyst tracks mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features, and its AI Agent Insights reads your log files. Both are sold by quote. Semrush tracks cited pages in Prompt Tracking and Brand Performance from $99 a month, and analyses AI bots in its Log File Analyzer and Enterprise Agent Analytics. Ahrefs shows cited domains and pages in Brand Radar from $199 a month per platform, and its Bot Analytics is free during beta through a Cloudflare connection. The best choice depends mostly on which suite you already use.

What does "AI agent citations" cover?

Two related things, and a good set-up measures both:

  • Citations in AI answers: when ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI features cite a page on your site as a source.
  • AI agents on your site: the crawlers and fetchers that read your pages before any citation can happen. OpenAI alone runs four: GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for its search index, ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages live when a user asks something, and OAI-AdsBot, which checks landing pages submitted as ChatGPT ads.

A page that agents cannot reach will rarely be cited. A page agents read often but never cite needs better content, not better access. Seeing both together is what turns data into fixes.

BrightEdge: strongest for enterprise workflows

BrightEdge's AI Catalyst separates two measures that are easy to confuse: being mentioned in an answer, and being cited as a source. It maps prompts to buyer journey stages, and its AI Hyper Cube looks at which queries trigger AI Overviews and who wins the citation. On the agent side, AI Agent Insights uses your log files to show how AI agents reach your content.

BrightEdge's own research makes the case for watching agents. It reports that sites receive, on average, 88 AI agent visits for every 100 human visits from organic search, and that about 95% of that agent activity comes from OpenAI. It also found that only 19% of enterprise sites have any directives specific to ChatGPT agents. Among those that do, 77% block GPTBot, while only 21% address OAI-SearchBot. That matters, because blocking the training crawler does not by itself block search, and a search crawler that is ignored or throttled limits visibility.

The trade-off is cost and access: BrightEdge sells by quote to enterprises. Its broader platform is covered in the BrightEdge review.

Semrush: strongest for price and breadth in one suite

Semrush reports citations in several places. Prompt Tracking counts citations of your domain, which it calls Owned Sources, for your own prompts in ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini. Brand Performance reports citations across Semrush's question set on ChatGPT, AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini each week. Position Tracking shows AI Overview citations for your keywords.

For agents, its Log File Analyzer shows how AI bots crawl your site from your server logs, and Site Audit flags pages blocked from AI search. Semrush Enterprise adds Bot Analytics, covering 30 bots including 10 AI bots, and Agent Analytics inside its enterprise AI optimisation product. The self-serve tools start at $99 a month for the AI Visibility Toolkit.

Ahrefs: strongest for citation research

Ahrefs' Brand Radar is built for research at scale. Its Cited Domains and Cited Pages reports show which sites and URLs AI answers cite for any brand or topic, across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Grok, drawn from a database of hundreds of millions of prompts. Site Explorer shows your own cited pages over time.

For agents, Bot Analytics collects server-side data through Cloudflare, with no JavaScript tag. It groups traffic into 12 bot categories, including AI assistants, and shows which pages each bot crawled, by hour, day, week or month. It is free during its beta. The trade-off is that it needs Cloudflare. A step-by-step citation method is in how to use Ahrefs to find pages and domains cited in AI answers.

How do you connect citations and agent data?

Whichever tool you use, run the same monthly check:

  1. List your most-cited pages and your most important uncited pages.
  2. Check agent visits for each in the log or bot report: which AI agents fetched them, how often, and with what status codes.
  3. Uncited and unvisited: check robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules, and whether the content is in the initial HTML.
  4. Visited but uncited: improve the content. Answer the question directly, add specifics, and check what competitors' cited pages include.
  5. Cited but rarely visited by ChatGPT-User: the citation may come from an index copy. Keep the page current so the cached version stays accurate.

Which should you choose?

  • BrightEdge if you are an enterprise already on its platform, or need journey-mapped reporting across many markets.
  • Semrush if you want daily prompt tracking, AI bot log analysis and full SEO data in one self-serve suite, from $99 a month for the AI toolkit.
  • Ahrefs if citation research across competitors is the priority and your site runs on Cloudflare. Its $50-a-month prompt package is the cheapest way to start tracking your own citations among the three.

Other comparisons include Authoritas vs SE Ranking vs Semrush, BrightEdge vs seoClarity and Conductor vs seoClarity for reporting cited pages.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative insurer, Fairhaven Mutual, on Semrush. Prompt Tracking showed its claims guide was never cited in ChatGPT answers about filing a claim, while two competitor guides were. The Log File Analyzer showed ChatGPT-User requests to the guide returning errors, because a firewall rule rate-limited unfamiliar bots. After IT allowed OpenAI's published agents, the errors stopped. Within a month the guide began appearing among ChatGPT's cited sources for some claim questions. The team added the agent check to its monthly report.

What do people ask about these tools?

Which tool shows AI citations for free?

None covers every engine. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows citations and cited pages for Copilot and Bing's AI answers, Google Search Console's generative AI report shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page, and Ahrefs' Bot Analytics is free during beta for agent data.

Can these tools see ChatGPT-User visits?

Yes, through log or server data: BrightEdge AI Agent Insights, Semrush's log tools and Ahrefs Bot Analytics.

Which covers the most AI platforms for citations?

Ahrefs Brand Radar covers seven in its database, plus Claude through custom prompts. BrightEdge and Semrush each cover four or five, depending on the report.

Do I need log files?

For agent data, yes, or a CDN integration. Citation tracking itself does not need logs.
