Can Search Live Recommend Local Businesses During a Real-Time Conversation?
Yes. Search Live is Google's AI Mode spoken aloud, with the phone's camera as an option. Someone can ask “where can I get a bike puncture fixed near here today?” and hear an answer, with web links shown on screen to explore. Google has not published anything specific about how Search Live chooses local businesses, so the sensible assumption is that it draws on the same sources as AI Mode: Business Profiles, reviews, business websites and directories. What changes in a live conversation is the shape of the answer. Spoken replies name fewer options, and people refine them out loud: “somewhere open now”, “with parking”, “cheaper than that”. Businesses with complete, specific details are easier to name in that back-and-forth.

How would it choose local businesses?
Because Live is a way of using AI Mode, local answers come from the same places:
- Google Business Profiles: categories, hours, attributes, photos, services and reviews. BrightLocal's 2026 study of 1.9 million local AI citations found Business Profiles were the single largest source, at about 28.5%.
- Reviews on Google and on sites such as Yelp, which was the next most-cited local source in the same study.
- Business websites, especially service and location pages that state what you do, where and for whom.
- Directories and local publications that mention the business.
Google is also turning local listings into AI-generated summaries with AI Mode-style follow-up questions, according to reports in September 2026, which points the same way: conversational answers built from profile and web data. How Google Maps uses Gemini for the same kind of questions is covered in how Google Maps uses Gemini for conversational discovery.
How does a spoken conversation change the answer?
- Fewer names. A spoken reply that lists ten shops would be unusable, so answers tend to name a few, with the rest reachable through links on screen.
- Refinement by follow-up. People add constraints as they go: distance, opening hours, price, parking, accessibility, kid-friendliness. Each constraint filters on details a business has published, or not.
- Camera questions. Someone can point the camera at a shopfront, a menu or a broken part and ask what it is, whether the place is good, or where to get it fixed.
- In-the-moment intent. Live is built for real-time help, so questions are often urgent and local: now, nearby, today. Think of a burst pipe, a lost phone charger, a last-minute gift or a pharmacy late at night, the kinds of question people would rather say than type.
Why AI answers can differ from the map ranking you are used to is covered in why AI local recommendations differ from map rankings.
Which follow-up questions test your details?
Each spoken refinement leans on a specific piece of information. If it is missing, the business is easy to drop:
| Follow-up a person might say | Where the answer can come from |
|---|---|
| “Which of those is open now?” | Hours and special hours on your Business Profile |
| “Is there parking?” | Profile attributes, your website, reviews |
| “Something cheaper?” | Price range on your profile, prices on your website |
| “Can I bring a wheelchair / pram?” | Accessibility attributes and reviews |
| “Do they do same-day?” | Services listed on your profile and service pages |
| “Are they any good?” | Review ratings and what reviews actually say |
Businesses that publish these details give the conversation something to confirm; those that do not leave the answer to guesswork or to a competitor that did.
How can a local business prepare?
- Complete your Business Profile: primary and secondary categories, services or menu, hours including holiday hours, and attributes such as parking, accessibility, payment options and outdoor seating.
- Keep hours and availability accurate, since “open now” is one of the most natural spoken follow-ups.
- Collect reviews steadily by asking every customer for an honest review in their own words. Detailed reviews give AI answers specific things to say.
- Publish clear service and location pages on your website, with prices or price ranges, service areas and what makes you different.
- Keep your name, address and phone consistent across directories, as covered in whether inconsistent NAP data stops AI recommending you.
- Make your shopfront and signage match your listing, since a camera question may start from what someone sees.
- Answer the phone. Google's AI can call nearby businesses on searchers' behalf in some US categories, as covered in whether Google's AI can call businesses for quotes, and a spoken recommendation often ends in a call.
How can you check what Search Live says?
Use it the way a customer would. Open the Google app near your business, tap Live, and ask a realistic question aloud, then follow up with two or three constraints. Note which businesses are named, in what order, what reasons are given, and which links appear on screen. Search Live conversations are saved in AI Mode history, so you can review the wording afterwards. Repeat from a few locations and at different times of day, since distance and opening hours change the answer.
We have not tested Search Live systematically for local recommendations. This page is based on Google's announcements and help pages for Search Live, BrightLocal's research on local AI sources and reports on Google's local listing changes.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative bike repair shop, Vellcombe Cycles, in a busy city neighbourhood. The owner tried Search Live from the café next door and asked where to get a puncture fixed today. The answer named two chains and a mobile mechanic; a follow-up asking for somewhere walkable added one competitor, not Vellcombe Cycles. Its Business Profile had no services listed, the wrong Sunday hours and only a handful of reviews. The owner added services with prices, fixed the hours, turned on the “walk-ins welcome” attribute, and began asking every customer for a review. A month later, the same spoken question named Vellcombe Cycles second, citing same-day repairs.
What do people ask about Search Live and local businesses?
Is Search Live available outside the US?
Yes. Since March 2026 it has been available wherever AI Mode is offered, in more than 200 countries and territories.
Does Search Live use my Google Business Profile?
Google has not said specifically, but it runs on AI Mode, whose local answers draw heavily on Business Profile data.
Can I pay to be recommended in Search Live?
Google has not announced ads in Search Live's spoken replies. It does sell ads inside AI Mode, which Search Live runs on: ads can appear below and within AI Mode responses, and its Highlighted Answers format makes ads eligible in AI Mode recommendation lists, labelled "Sponsored". Whether those appear among the links on screen during a Live conversation is not documented.
How do I see what Search Live said?
Search Live conversations are saved in AI Mode history in the Google app.
