How Is Google Maps Using Gemini for Conversational Discovery?
Mainly through Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered chat inside Google Maps. Google launched it in March 2026 in the US and India, and in August extended it in English to more than 150 countries and territories. People ask detailed questions, such as "where can I charge my phone without queuing for coffee?", and get a conversational answer with a custom map. Google says it draws on more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors, and personalises answers using places people have searched or saved. It can also book tables and hotels, and add food orders to a cart. For businesses, it means your profile, reviews and photos are read and summarised by Gemini. Visibility depends on what those sources say about the details people ask about.

What is Ask Maps, and why is it overlooked in local SEO?
Ask Maps sits under the search bar in the Maps app. Instead of typing "coffee shop", people describe what they need: a quiet café with outdoor seating open after 8pm, a tennis court with lights, a restaurant with a table for four tonight that suits a vegan. Gemini works through Maps' place data and reviews to answer, shows options on a map, and adds tips drawn from contributors. Conversations are kept in a history, and people can rate answers.
It is overlooked for three practical reasons:
- No rankings to track. Answers are conversational and personalised, so there is no fixed position to monitor the way there is for the local pack.
- No separate reporting. Business Profile Performance shows calls, directions and website clicks, but not which came through Ask Maps.
- It feels like Maps, not AI search. Local SEO work often treats Maps as the local pack, and AI visibility work often focuses on ChatGPT. Ask Maps falls between the two.
Yet the questions it answers are exactly the long, specific ones where a business's details make the difference.
What does Ask Maps read about a business?
Google says Ask Maps taps into Maps' "fresh information about the world", including places and reviews. For a business, that means:
- Business Profile details: categories, services, hours, attributes such as outdoor seating or wheelchair access, and menus.
- Reviews, which describe the experience in customers' own words, such as "quiet enough to work" or "great for kids".
- Photos, from the business and from customers.
- Contributor tips and edits.
The same data feeds Gemini's local answers elsewhere, as covered in how Business Profile reviews and Maps data affect Gemini local recommendations. Google has not published how Ask Maps weighs these sources, and we have not tested it systematically ourselves.
How can a business prepare?
- Fill in every relevant attribute. Questions often hinge on details such as parking, accessibility, outdoor seating, Wi-Fi or dog-friendliness, which attributes capture.
- Keep hours exact, including special hours for holidays, since "open now" and "open late" questions are common.
- Add menus, services and prices, so detailed questions can be answered from your own data.
- Post current photos that show what people ask about, such as seating, entrances and the space itself.
- Encourage honest reviews by asking every customer, without suggesting what to write. Reviews that describe the real experience naturally cover the details Ask Maps uses.
- Connect booking and ordering. If you take reservations or orders through a supported partner, such as Square or Toast for food ordering, Ask Maps can act on them.
- Watch for edits. Ask Maps now lets users suggest edits conversationally. Google says it is rolling out email alerts so verified, active owners can review important edits before they go live; check your profile regularly regardless.
Profile basics are covered in how to optimise a Google Business Profile for local AI search.
How can you check what Ask Maps says?
- Ask the questions your customers ask, in full sentences, near your location.
- Vary the details: time of day, group size, dietary or access needs.
- Note which businesses it suggests and what reasons it gives, such as review themes.
- Repeat on different devices and accounts, since answers are personalised.
- Record the results monthly, because there is no report to do it for you.
Where answers leave you out, look at the reasons given for competitors. If Ask Maps says a rival "has plenty of seating for groups", check whether your profile and reviews say the same about you.
What are the risks for businesses?
- Wrong details spread quickly. If your hours or services are out of date, Ask Maps can repeat the error in a confident, conversational answer.
- User edits. Conversational edits make suggesting changes easier, which helps keep Maps current but also means incorrect suggestions may reach your profile.
- Review themes become the pitch. Gemini summarises what reviewers say, so a recurring complaint, such as slow service at lunch, can appear in answers.
- Fewer, more decisive choices. A chat answer usually suggests a handful of places, so being fourth-best on the map may mean not being mentioned at all.
None of these is new in kind, but a conversational answer makes each one more visible, and there is no report to warn you. Apart from Google's email alerts about important edits to your profile, regular manual checks are the only early warning of what Ask Maps is actually saying about you.
How does Ask Maps relate to Gemini and AI Mode?
They share Google's place data but serve different moments. AI Mode in Search handles broad research and planning, as covered in what Google AI Mode is. The Gemini app answers local questions using Maps grounding. Ask Maps is used by people already in Maps, often closer to the moment of going somewhere. A business described well in Maps data benefits in all three. Whether Gemini also uses web search is covered in whether Gemini uses Google Search data.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative café, Quillfern Café, that rarely appeared when people asked Ask Maps for "a quiet café with good Wi-Fi to work for a few hours". Its profile listed no Wi-Fi or seating attributes, and its photos showed only coffee. The owner added the Wi-Fi, power outlets and seating attributes, uploaded photos of the work tables, and set exact weekday hours. They also asked every customer for an honest review, without prompting. Within weeks, Ask Maps began suggesting the café for work-friendly questions, citing reviews that mentioned "plenty of plugs" and "calm in the mornings".
