Mentionlytics Review: Seeing Actual LLM Answers and Their Sources

Mentionlytics is a social listening tool with an AI Visibility add-on. The add-on is good at something many trackers hide: the exact answer text and the sources behind every number. You can click any figure on the dashboard to read the full response from each engine. You can see which domains and URLs were cited, and check whether those sources are positive, neutral or hostile. The add-on starts at $49 a month for 25 prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Perplexity and Copilot need the $379 Business tier. It sits on top of a Mentionlytics listening plan, so the real cost is the two together. It suits brand and PR teams that want AI answers beside their social and web mentions.

What does the AI Visibility add-on show?

As described on Mentionlytics' product page:

  • AI Visibility Score: how often AI recommends you compared with competitors, with rank, share of voice and sentiment, tracked day by day.
  • Engine breakdown: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and others side by side.
  • Exact answers: click any statistic to read the word-for-word response, including how AI frames you, such as budget or premium.
  • Competitor context: which brands appear alongside you, plus "hidden competitors" and adjacent categories AI suggests instead.
  • Sources: the domains and URLs feeding answers, ranked by citation weight, with the sentiment of each source and which engines rely on it.
  • Buyer prompts: your own prompts, or suggestions based on your brand and industry.

Because it runs inside a listening tool, it can also link a cited source to the live web mention Mentionlytics has already collected, which is useful when a critical review or forum thread starts shaping answers.

How are answers collected?

Mentionlytics says every prompt runs in a clean session, like a new user with no history, rather than through filtered APIs. Scans can run from the country you choose, and answers do differ by market. Frequency is up to you, from weekly overviews to one, two or four scans a day. More scans give a steadier picture of answers that vary from run to run, but they also use more of your allowance, since the add-on is priced in credits.

What does it cost?

The AI Visibility add-on:

Tier Prompts Engines noted Price per month Price per prompt
Essential 25 ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, AI Mode $49 about $1.96
Advanced 50 Same $99 about $1.98
Pro 100 Same $169 about $1.69
Business 250 Adds Perplexity and Copilot $379 about $1.52
Enterprise 400+ Adds Perplexity and Copilot $559 about $1.40

The add-on attaches to a listening plan. Those run from $49 a month billed yearly for Basic, with 3 keyword rules and 5,000 mentions, through Essential at $169, Advanced at $299, Pro at $499 and Business at $749 (white-label reports for agencies), up to Enterprise from $1,299. The pricing page shows the AI add-on from the Essential plan up, while the product page says it can be added to any plan, so confirm with sales. A small team using Essential listening plus the Essential AI add-on would pay about $218 a month. Also ask how scan frequency and engine choice use credits, since the page does not say.

How well does it show answers and sources?

This is its strongest area. Many trackers report a score and a list of cited domains; Mentionlytics lets you move from the score to the answer to the source in a few clicks. That supports three kinds of work:

  • Checking accuracy. Reading the exact answer shows outdated prices, wrong features or unfair comparisons.
  • Choosing outreach targets. Sources ranked by citation weight, filtered by engine, show which articles and review pages to approach.
  • Spotting reputation risks. Hostile sources flagged by sentiment show which critical pages are shaping answers before they spread further.

A tracker that hides the answer text makes each of these guesswork. Goodie, which also shows answer analysis and source tracing, is covered in the Goodie review.

How should you read the AI Visibility Score?

Treat the score as a pointer to answers worth reading, not as a result in itself. It blends how often you appear, where you rank against competitors and the tone used, so a change can come from any of the three. When it moves, open the prompts behind the change and read the answers before reporting it. Keep the prompt list, engines and markets fixed for at least a month, because adding prompts changes the score without any change in how AI treats you. For leadership, report the score next to two plain counts: prompts where you were named, and prompts where you were named first.

Where does it fall short?

  • Engine gaps at entry. Perplexity and Copilot need Business, and Claude is not listed.
  • Two subscriptions. The add-on needs a listening plan, so it costs more than standalone trackers at the same prompt count.
  • Credit opacity. The link between prompts, engines, scan frequency and credits is not spelled out.
  • Self-assessment. Mentionlytics' own roundup of AI visibility tools ranks Mentionlytics first. Its author discloses working there; weigh it accordingly.
  • Outreach advice. The product suggests joining community threads that AI cites. Take part only as an open, identified brand account, since undisclosed promotion breaks most communities' rules and can backfire in the answers you are trying to improve.

We have not tested Mentionlytics ourselves; these points come from its published pages.

How does it compare?

Among listening tools with AI modules, Brand24's Chatbeat starts at $99 a month for 30 prompts and runs as a separate product, while Meltwater's GenAI Lens is an enterprise add-on. Among standalone trackers, similar prompt counts cost less, but without the listening data. More on these is in Brand24 vs Mention, the Meltwater GenAI Lens review and the Sitechecker review.

Who is it for?

  • Good fit: brand, PR and comms teams already using Mentionlytics, or wanting listening and AI visibility from one vendor; agencies that report both to clients.
  • Poor fit: SEO teams that only need AI tracking, and teams that need Perplexity or Claude on a small budget.

How should you trial it?

Use the free trial on 20 of your most important prompts. For each, click through to the answer and compare it with what you see in the same assistant yourself. Check the source list against the pages you know matter in your market. Then ask sales how your chosen frequency and engines map to credits before buying.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative boutique hotel group, Morvock Hotels, already using Mentionlytics for review monitoring. The AI add-on showed ChatGPT describing one property as "dated", and clicking through revealed the phrase came from a three-year-old travel article. The source list also flagged a hostile review thread cited by Gemini. The team contacted the article's publisher with renovation photos, replied openly to the review thread, and updated the property page. Two months later, the "dated" description had gone from most answers.
