Semrush AI Toolkit vs ZipTie: Comparing Mid-Range AI Visibility Tools

Both start under $100 a month, but they are built differently. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, at $99 per domain, tracks 25 prompts daily in ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini. It adds prompt research, weekly brand reports and access to Semrush's SEO data. ZipTie now sells through ziptie.ai, metered at about 1 cent per prompt per engine per check, across seven engines, archiving each answer's full text and citations; older ziptie.dev plans remain for existing customers. Semrush suits daily tracking of a short list inside an SEO workflow. ZipTie suits weekly tracking of a longer list, with archived answers for clients. The right choice depends on your prompt count and how often you need data.

How do they compare?

As listed in Semrush's knowledge base and pricing pages, and on both ZipTie sites:

What does each cost for the same job?

Three common tracking jobs, using list prices:

Job 1: 25 prompts, daily. Semrush's toolkit covers this for $99, producing about 2,250 answers a month across three engines. On ziptie.ai, 25 daily prompts on three engines use about 2,250 checks a month, about $22 a month at the list rate, on whichever engines you pick. ZipTie is cheaper; Semrush adds prompt research and SEO data.

Job 2: 100 prompts, weekly. On ziptie.ai, 100 weekly prompts on three engines use about 1,300 checks a month, about $13 a month at the list rate; the $42.75 'Starter' figure is only a pre-filled starting configuration that includes the UGC add-on, not a minimum. Semrush tracks daily, and reaching 125 prompts costs $99 plus two 50-prompt packs at $60 each, $219 a month. ZipTie is far cheaper when weekly data is enough.

Job 3: 200 prompts, daily. On ziptie.ai, 200 daily prompts on three engines use about 18,000 checks a month, roughly $180 of usage at 1 cent each. Semrush would cost $99 plus four prompt packs, $339 for 225 prompts, or $549 for Semrush One Advanced with 200 prompts and the full SEO toolkit.

The pattern: Semrush costs more per answer at every volume, and you pay for its research and SEO data, not for cheaper tracking; ZipTie's per-check model rewards less frequent tracking most.

Which gives better evidence?

ZipTie's standout is the archive of each response: the full text and citations, kept for every check, so a report can show the actual answer rather than only a score. The older ziptie.dev plans also added a screenshot of each answer. On ziptie.ai, AI Overview checks also capture the organic top 10 on Google and Bing, so you can see rankings and citations together.

Semrush shows the full answer text in Brand Performance and a snapshot of the results in Prompt Tracking, and its AI data sits next to rankings, backlinks and site audits for the same domain. For an SEO team, that context is often more useful than an archive of answers. More on ZipTie's evidence approach is in the ZipTie review.

What does each add beyond tracking?

  • Semrush: Prompt Research estimates which topics people ask AI about, from a database of more than 317 million prompts, and the weekly Brand Performance reports cover sentiment, narratives and the questions asked about your brand. SEO tools are part of Semrush One bundles.
  • ZipTie: the AI Success Score blends mentions, citations, placement and sentiment into one number per prompt, useful for sorting priorities. Ziptie.ai adds optional UGC impact analysis, content generation and API access.

Where do they fall short?

  • Semrush: no free trial for the toolkit, prompt tracking only daily, and no Perplexity in daily tracking. Costs rise quickly past 25 prompts or one domain.
  • ZipTie: two products with different pricing can confuse buyers, the older ziptie.dev, kept for existing customers, covers only three platforms, and daily tracking of long lists gets expensive on checks. Add-ons on ziptie.ai, such as UGC analysis at 80% on top of the prompt cost, raise the price.

What should agencies check before choosing?

  • Per-domain or pooled pricing. Semrush charges $99 for each extra domain on the toolkit. Ask ZipTie whether one plan's checks can be spread across several client projects, since that decides whether one plan can serve many clients.
  • Client-ready reports. Semrush's toolkit includes PDF reports in its reporting area; ZipTie's archived answers and citations can go straight into client decks.
  • Cadence by client. Few clients need daily data on every prompt. Mixing daily, weekly and monthly prompts, as ziptie.ai allows, keeps costs down.
  • Engines by client. A retailer may care most about Google's AI features, while a software company may care most about ChatGPT. Match each client's engines to where its buyers ask.

Who should choose which?

  • Semrush if your team already uses it for SEO, tracks one domain with a short daily list, and wants prompt research.
  • ZipTie (ziptie.ai) if you track many prompts weekly, want metered pricing across up to seven engines, and report to clients from archived answers and citations.
  • ZipTie (ziptie.ai) if you need seven engines with a mix of daily, weekly and monthly prompts.

How should you trial them?

Start with ziptie.ai's free seven-day trial, using 25 prompts you already check by hand. Compare its archived answers and citations with your own runs. Run both on the same 25 prompts in the same week: start Semrush's toolkit and ziptie.ai's seven-day trial together, and compare ChatGPT, the only engine both cover during the trial. AI Mode and Gemini on ziptie.ai need a paid plan. Where the tools disagree, check by hand. Finally, work out your real cadence, deciding which prompts need daily data and which weekly, and price both tools for that mix.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative agency, Quorholt Digital, tracking AI visibility for eight small clients. It needed about 40 prompts per client, checked weekly, and archived answers for monthly reports. Semrush would have cost $159 or more per client domain, the toolkit plus one prompt pack. On ziptie.ai, 320 weekly prompts on three engines came to about 4,100 checks a month, roughly $41 a month, with each client as a separate project inside one workspace, since projects are not billed and every client there runs on the same three engines. The agency kept Semrush for its own SEO work and one client that needed daily tracking in Gemini, and used ZipTie for the rest.
