Why Does Gemini Show Two Locations for the Same Business in Buyer Answers?

Usually because Google Maps holds two place records for you. Gemini retrieves places, addresses and opening hours from Maps data. So a duplicate Business Profile, an old profile left open after a move, or legitimate separate profiles for practitioners or departments can all surface as two locations. Your website can add to the confusion by listing a registered office and a trading address without saying which one customers should visit. Google allows one profile per business. It says a business that moves should update its existing profile rather than create a new one, and that when duplicates are merged, their reviews are combined. Find which kind of second record you have, then merge, close, relabel or explain it.

Where does Gemini get the second location?

Mostly from Google Maps. Google's documentation for grounding Gemini with Maps says the model retrieves places, reviews, photos, addresses and opening hours from Maps data when a question has a location in it. The Gemini app also uses public information from Google Maps automatically. If Maps has two entries that look like your business, Gemini may list both, or pick the wrong one. It can also draw on web pages, so an old address on your site or a directory can add a second location even when Maps is clean. How Gemini uses Maps and reviews is covered in how Business Profile reviews and Maps data affect Gemini local recommendations.

Which kinds of second record cause this?

Cause What it looks like Fix
Duplicate profile Two profiles for the same business at the same place Request a merge, or remove the duplicate you created
Old profile after a move One at the old address, one at the new Close or remove the old one; in future, update the address on the existing profile
Auto-created listing An unclaimed profile built from third-party data Claim it, then merge or remove it
Practitioner or department profiles Separate profiles for a doctor, lawyer or department at your address Keep if allowed, but make names and categories distinct
Service-area confusion One profile showing an address, another hiding it Keep one profile with the address hidden and a service area set
Website addresses Registered office and trading address listed side by side Label which is open to customers, and fix structured data

How do you find duplicates?

  1. Search Google Maps for your business name, your current address and any previous address.
  2. Search for variations of your name, such as with and without "Ltd" or a location suffix.
  3. Check the Business Profile IDs of the profiles you manage, in the profile's advanced settings, so you can tell support exactly which is which.
  4. Ask Gemini directly: "Where is [business] in [town]?" and "What are the opening hours of [business]?", and note which address it gives and what it cites.

Checking what Gemini says more broadly is covered in how to check what Gemini says about your business.

How do you fix a true duplicate?

Google's help page on duplicate profiles sets out the routes:

  • If you created the duplicate by mistake, remove it from your account. Google warns that removing a profile deletes all its content and linked managers, so be sure you remove the right one.
  • If two profiles exist on Maps for the same business, request a merge by suggesting an edit on Google Maps. Google reviews every merge request, and says merges succeed when the profiles represent the same business with the same information.
  • If someone else owns the other profile, request ownership first; the current owner has three days to respond.

Google says that when two profiles are merged, their reviews are combined, but replies to reviews may be lost. A profile Google treats as a duplicate does not show on Search or Maps at all, which is another reason to resolve it rather than leave both.

What if you moved?

Update the address on your existing profile rather than creating a new one, as Google advises. If a second profile already exists at the old address, mark the old location as closed or ask for it to be removed or merged, depending on whether it is a duplicate or a genuinely separate place. Then update every other record of the old address: your website's footer, contact page and structured data, Bing Places, Apple Business, Yelp, Foursquare and the main directories in your sector. Wrong addresses in Bing and Copilot are covered in why Copilot cites Bing Places but not your location page.

What if both profiles are legitimate?

Google allows separate profiles for individual practitioners and for departments within businesses, universities, hospitals and government buildings. A GP surgery may have a profile for the practice and profiles for individual doctors; a car dealership may have separate sales and service departments. Gemini may present these as two locations of the same business. To reduce confusion:

  • Name them distinctly, following Google's naming rules, such as "Northgate Motors – Service Centre".
  • Use distinct categories, so each matches different questions.
  • Point each to its own page on your website, explaining what happens there.

If your website lists a registered office that customers cannot visit, say so plainly, for example "Registered office (not open to the public)", and list only the trading address in your LocalBusiness structured data. Google does not allow profiles for virtual offices that are not staffed.

Does merging duplicate Google Business Profiles improve recommendations in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity?

For Gemini, it is likely to help. Merged profiles combine their reviews and remove the conflicting place record, so Gemini has one consistent set of facts and a stronger review base to draw on. That does not guarantee a recommendation, but it removes a reason to be left out or described wrongly.

For ChatGPT and Perplexity, a Google merge alone does less, because neither reads Google Business Profiles directly. They rely on your website, Yelp and other directories. Duplicates and old addresses there cause the same problem, so repeat the clean-up on Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business and Foursquare. SOCi's 2026 study found business facts such as addresses were often wrong in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers, which is what scattered data produces.

How long does it take Gemini to reflect the fix?

Merges and closures go through Google's review, and changes then need to reach Maps data and Gemini's answers. Allow several weeks, and recheck weekly. If Gemini keeps giving an old address after Maps is correct, look at the sources it cites, since an old web page or directory may be the remaining cause. How to ask Google to correct a false answer is covered in whether you can ask Google to correct a false Gemini answer.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative physiotherapy clinic, Wharfside Physio, which moved across town. Gemini's answers listed both the old and new addresses as "two locations". The team had created a new Business Profile for the new site and left the old one open, and the website footer still showed the old address. Wharfside asked Google to merge the profiles and move the reviews, updated its footer, contact page and structured data, and corrected Bing Places, Yelp and two health directories. Six weeks later, Gemini gave only the new address and cited the merged profile's reviews.

What do people ask about duplicate locations in Gemini?

Can a business have two Google Business Profiles?

Only in allowed cases, such as separate locations with their own staff, departments or individual practitioners. Google allows one profile per business at one location.

What happens to reviews when profiles merge?

Google says reviews are combined, but replies to reviews may be lost.

Should I create a new profile after moving?

No. Google says to update the address on the existing profile.

Does fixing Google fix ChatGPT too?

Not fully. ChatGPT and Perplexity use your website and other directories, so fix those as well.
