Surfer SEO Review: Content Optimization and AI Visibility Features
Surfer is a content optimisation platform that has added an AI Tracker. The tracker records mention rate, position, a visibility score and cited sources for the prompts you track. It comes in two ways. It is bundled with content plans, where the $99-a-month Standard plan tracks 25 prompts on ChatGPT only, weekly, and Pro at $182 a month tracks 50 prompts daily on more models. Or you can buy it alone as AI Search Analytics, from $82 a month for 50 prompts refreshed daily. Those prices assume annual billing. It suits teams that already write in Surfer and want tracking beside the editor. Buyers who want tracking alone have many alternatives.
What does Surfer SEO's AI Tracker measure, and what else does Surfer offer?
According to Surfer's help centre, the AI Tracker reports:
- Visibility score: how often and how well your brand appears across tracked prompts and models.
- Mention rate: how often your domain is mentioned.
- Average position: where you appear in answers that list brands.
- Topics and prompts: your best and worst performing questions.
- Sources: the pages AI models reference most, with the brands each source mentions and in what sentiment.
- Mention gap and sentiment, on higher plans and the standalone plan.
Surfer suggests prompts from an analysis of your brand when you set up a project, and you can add or remove prompts later. It says it uses a self-consistency method. Rather than relying on a single response, it checks that naming and sources agree across answers, and runs the same questions across different models and prompt variations. It has monitored ChatGPT and ChatGPT Search since launch. It added Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity in July 2025, and its pricing page also lists Gemini.
The rest of Surfer is a writing and optimisation suite:
- Content Editor, with live guidelines and a content score.
- Content Audit, which flags ranking drops and suggests pages to refresh.
- Surfy, an AI writing assistant.
- Internal linking, content gap and cannibalisation reports on Pro and above.
- Integrations, an MCP server, and an API on the top plan.
Surfer was acquired by Positive Group, a European marketing software company, in October 2025, and now appears on its site as part of Positive.

Surfer's help centre says the standalone AI Search Analytics plan also comes with 100, 200 or unlimited prompts. Annual billing saves up to 17% compared with monthly payments.
Surfer AI tracker review: ChatGPT-only tracking vs multi-LLM plans
The Standard plan is the catch. Its AI Tracker covers 25 prompts on ChatGPT only, refreshed weekly. That is enough to see whether ChatGPT mentions you for a handful of questions. It does not show how you appear in Google's AI features, Perplexity or Gemini, and a weekly refresh gives four data points a month per prompt.
To track several models daily, you need Pro, Peace of Mind, Enterprise or the standalone AI Search Analytics plan. For a buyer who does not use Surfer's editor, AI Search Analytics at $82 a month (annual) is the cheaper route. It costs less than Pro and has the same 50 daily prompts. For a team that writes in Surfer, Pro at $182 combines the editor and multi-model tracking. Adding AI Search Analytics to Standard would cost $181 a month, almost the same as Pro, with fewer content features.
Per tracked prompt, AI Search Analytics works out at about $1.64 a month on annual billing, which is in the mid-range of dedicated trackers.
Why does Surfer scrape answers instead of using APIs?
Surfer argues that API results do not reflect what users see, and has published data to back it. In a 2026 study, it ran 1,000 prompts through five AI products, twice: once by scraping the consumer interfaces and once through APIs. That produced 13,779 answers. The overlap between the brands named by each method was only 15.5% to 23.8% on raw names, and 21.3% to 31.6% after matching variant names. Sources and answer length differed too.
Surfer sells a scraping-based tracker, so it has an interest in the result. The finding is still an important question to put to any vendor: does the tool measure the answers your customers see, or an API approximation? How that trade-off affects cost and terms of service is covered in whether GEO tools are overpriced prompt trackers or useful visibility tools.
How useful is the content side for AI visibility?
Surfer's editor scores content against the terms and structure of pages that already rank. That helps with coverage, and pages that rank in Google are more likely to be retrieved by Google's AI features. But matching what already ranks is not the same as adding something new, and assistants have plenty of pages that say the same thing. Pages that get cited tend to add specifics, such as current prices, clear comparisons, first-hand detail, data or expert judgement. Use the editor to check coverage, then add material competitors lack. How SEO basics carry over to AI visibility is covered in how traditional SEO fundamentals affect AI visibility.
The Content Audit's refresh suggestions are useful for AI visibility. Outdated pages give assistants wrong facts, and fresh, accurate pages are safer to cite.
How should you trial it?
- Replace Surfer's suggested prompts with 25 to 50 questions from sales calls and support tickets, since suggested prompts may not match what your buyers ask.
- Run ten of them yourself in the same assistants and compare the brands and sources with what the tracker records.
- Open the Sources view for questions you lose, and check whether the listed pages really shape those answers.
- Refresh one outdated page flagged by Content Audit, and watch whether its mentions change over the following weeks.
Who is Surfer for?
- Good fit: content teams already using Surfer, who want AI tracking beside the editor, on Pro or above.
- Reasonable fit: buyers who want a mid-priced standalone tracker with source data and scraped answers, through AI Search Analytics.
- Poor fit: anyone relying on Standard for AI visibility beyond ChatGPT, and teams that need many engines, markets or technical crawler analytics.
A broader comparison with other SEO and AI tools is in Scrunch vs Peec vs AirOps vs Surfer. Features dedicated AI tools offer that SEO platforms lack are covered in what features AI visibility tools need that standard SEO platforms lack.
